Newbie and failing at this 😫

Hey everyone! I’m 32, mother of 2 (12 yrs and 17 mos), was 135 when I got pregnant with my oldest and could never lose the weight...am now 247 and have had surgery twice in the last year to repair 2 hernias..I’m finally recovered from my last surgery and ready to start losing this weight, but I’m struggling so bad! I try to stick with it but every single day I cave and eat something I’m not suppose to eat which ruins my whole day..can’t get into Ketosis that way! 😫 How do you keep your cravings in check?

What is it that you crave the most?  I try to find substitutes for it.  If it is sweets like cakes or cookies I made some fat bombs that tasted like cake batter or I have found a protein bar that will work for me and I might eat half if I am afraid of going over in protein.  If it is salty I eat some pistachios - they are higher in carbs though so be careful.  I usually don't go over on carbs so I have some room to work with.  I eat the kind that has the shell so I have to work for them.  Or hard boiled eggs.  The very first week I started though, if I made it through the day and had carbs left over and had done well as a reward I would have a very small bit of store bought whipped cream (yes it has a small bit of sugar).  I just started my 4th week and am learning what works and what doesn't.  These are some things that helped me in the beginning.......  Oh and I drink propel water mixed with regular water.  Do what is best for you even if it is gradually getting all the way into keto.  Don't worry about ketosis right away.  Remember that any day you made it farther than the last is another step towards being healthy.

sorrenbri  I crave everything I’m not suppose to lol...earlier it was a cheeseburger, yesterday it was cupcakes...My willpower is next to non existent right now so I’m struggling a little with being able to say no to my cravings especially if I have access to them. I wish it was easy for me to stay under carbs and still have some leftover! Lol

  • I can understand your struggle but to be completely honest...if you can’t stop yourself then you won’t be able to do it. There isn’t a trick to get over the cravings you have. Even if there were, just like anything that masks something, it can’t stay hidden forever. I’m no expert by any means, I only made the change a few months ago but I can attest that if you stick to it, you will cut weight fast! I’m 32, was a college athlete and also had back/hernia surgery and I can honestly tell you I’ve never looked this good. Lost 25 lbs and feel great. You can too!

But back to my point, for example, people are always asking me, yea but don’t you miss (crave) the foods you are talking about. I say no and that I have plenty of good food to eat but in my head I’m saying to myself, if it had to come down to it, I would choose tasteless or bad tasting food over delicious food if it meant I would feel better, be healthier, look better, etc...

maybe not the best analogy but it’s the same idea with drug addicts, you can try to get them to stop but they ultimately only will once they decide to. You’ll not eat those craved foods once you decide to! 😊

I would imagine it's harder to do this when you have kids in the house.  But your kids don't actually need cheeseburgers and cupcakes.  You can stock only healthy foods for them.  When I was responsible for my 4 siblings I found healthy treats improved behavior and grades.  I've been boxing up and giving all my non- Keto food to some friends that are on food stamps.  Soon I will have only Keto compliant food and special stuff I bought at craft fairs like homemade jellies and BBQ sauces which I plan to use in strict moderation.

bjmcinnis6dd is right about the drug addicts for me anyway.  I quit smoking 2.5 years ago and the only way for me to do it was to just cold turkey it.  I had been smoking for about 20 years off and on.  I never thought I would be able to quit.  Before then I ALWAYS found an excuse to need a cigarette.  Then I realized I didn't need that cigarette......  I did need to live though.  So I said no more.  It is a mind game, you have to want to do it.  Maybe you aren't ready.  Maybe Keto might not be the right thing for you.  Or maybe you are trying to do too much at once.  Some people only focus on limiting their carbs to 30 or 50 net carbs at first and then go down farther.  You can find alternative things to eat that taste like the real thing.  Try some of the Quest or One Protein bars to start.  They are not amazing Keto foods, but..... They taste pretty good and are better than the cupcake.  And they have a birthday cake flavor.  I drank more calories than anything else.  Soda's every day.  I hated water.  I am still not a total fan so I mix Propel water in to make it taste sweeter.  I just tried Bang energy drink and they are very sweet.  And join some groups on FB.

I had a cup of coffee with a tablespoon of kerrygold butter in it. It gets you over your hump. Cravings are only about 10 minutes so after the coffee, if you can, go for a quick walk or do something to distract yourself. Keep at it and before you know it it will be time to eat a meal. My hardest time was between 7-9 pm. I ate 2 pieces of a Lilly dark chocolate bar. You don’t even miss the sugar. But be careful, sweeteners can turn on the cravings.

arenees22 , eat some hamburger with cheese and vegetables, maybe 2-3 ounces. That will curb your cravings and is perfectly acceptable.

Lisarose  thank you! I should try the butter in my coffee..today seems a little easier , I’ve been able to extend my IF a little, whereas I usually eat my first meal at 9am, I’m aiming for noon today and so far so good. Luckily I’m trying to kick the sweets altogether so that I don’t still crave them..I did get some Swerve to use in place of my sugar but I never used sugar that much anyway, only 1/2 tsp in my coffee so now I just use 1/2 tsp of Swerve to save me some calories/carbs.

  • Eat only whole foods, fresh produce. All processed foods have sugar in them.  I make my own salad dressing from olive oil/vinegar and add some organic liquid stevia to it too sweeten it up a little. Once you get into ketosis the carb cravings will stop.  Personally, I never get "hangry" anymore either.

  • You should follow the low carb diets such as eggs, fish, vegetable and try to avoid food like bread, potato, pasta, noodles and other junk food. For a beginner its very hard to follow a new diet plan but after 3 or 4 weeks it will become more easy for you.

You must understand that you are doing this for you and for your health and prepare your mind mentally before starting any diet plan. Also, there are keto meal replacements shakes like these, you can choose from different delicious flavors. This is another good way to stick with your diet plan and you can enjoy different things at the same time.
