Holiday's are coming. Should fat adapters just eat like they did before being fat adapted, or make keto friendly items they can eat?

So in the US, Thanksgiving is coming and I'm pondering just eating the foods everyone else does in moderation- but keep the portions down or make myself keto friendly stuffing and pumpkin pie with artificial sweetners. If I do this, there will be leftovers I won't want to eat.  This is a tough one in my household since no one else is keto. A Turkey will be made along with gravy and stuffing and probably green bean caserol with pumpkin pie. I'm thinking of following strict keto days before with no carb ups and just preparing the food for my non keto household and call that a huge carb up day.  Would like to hear others opinions on this - I had a naughty carb up weekend and I have whole body inflammation ( retaining about 3 pounds of water ). Strangely enough, my blood meter was at .6 last night and early this morning.  Maybe I really just answered my own question.

    i dont know about you but when i carb cheat i feel like crap directly after and the next day as well not to mention what you just stated the water retention , bloated feeling , and the damn scale my plans are to eat from the thanksgiving buffet what im allowed to eat # meat  lol and then prepare califlower mash potaoes and some fat bombs or maybe a low carb cookie or dessert  the carb cheat guilts the hell outta me and for me its just not worth it   # the more u keto the more your body tells you what to do at least 😊for me it does  good luck over the holidays and keto on!!😜

    Yes I’m hearing this ! And in the middle of just such an experiment ... ( see low carb chat section). One thing I’m seeing as SO important - if we carb up , we’d better down the fat ! These 2 ( hi fat hi carb) just won’t go hand in hand. I guess that’s obvious but might be hard to  forget once fat adapted.

    none glad to hear someone else feels awful after having a high carb day. I feel nauseous and terrible stomach cramps after a 1-2 day high carb binge. Going to try to stay with keto thru the holidays and Halloween

    Can’t really contribute as being British we neither celebrate Thanksgiving nor the huge majority of us, Halloween. However,  I agree with you contemplating in advance, as for any event. Definitely make a Keto stuffing & gravy for yourself heap up the turkey & veg and make a very small dessert so there’s no left overs ~ at least that’s what I would do. If things made you sick your family wouldn’t bat an eye at slightly different dishes.  It’s a day in a year, it’ll be back again next year.... keep it about your family & friends not food or am I being too analytical?

  • last year I took things with me to my mom's party  to replace the high carb stuff. So I ate the meats, veggies etc they provided but brought my own keto stuffing and sugarfree dessert.

    Yah this is tough cuz there’s so much social to it. Esp in families we celebrate w food. Hey my daughter (33) and I (64) still make my mum’s thanksgiving favs and talk about it just this way for Tday ! That’s her cucumber salad, baked acorn squash, cranberries - also walnut stuffing and nutmeg gravy (!!) 

    I ignore Halloween no problem. We have fam reunion every Thanksgiving and the last thing I’d want  to do is draw attention to myself with diet (!!!). Christmas the same. 

    So how about eat naturally but like you’ve said - maybe a few choices, smaller portion, eat slowly socialize instead- don’t go back for more - or hey go back 2-3 x for very small portions spread across the plate each time - now that’s a real skill, isn’t it.

    AND most importantly, perhaps. Grab some MCT or bulletproof and make yourself a cup of tea - with these plus 1-2 Tbsp of butter in a blender. Maybe actually have 2 of these w break between them an hour or so before the meal begins. Don’t overfill so still feel comfy celebratory . Then won’t be hungry at all but can still enjoy. Attention to satiety !

    we know that usually mixing high fat w other calories is a no no. But I’m thinking just for this day might be fine. Id also just go right back on Plan the day after and stay away fm scale and keto stix for at least a couple days!
