Your probably going to get some opinions of others on this. I have had same feedback from others like- how can you eat all that fat, etc. Remember- we are all going against the grain of what we have been taught about the food pyramid. It's not the norm and some people - even family members get concerned. What you can do is do this for you- educate yourself- so research about people's heart numbers going down to a healthy level or vs versa. I think you will find more info on people showing their cholesterol levels trending downward. It's important to know this also takes time. I'm waiting 1 year to retest at my docs office. I would like to see a thread about this from other posters- their before and after blood levels of cholesterol. From what I am finding out- our body uses the cholesterol we ingest as energy- this goes against what we all have been taught from a small age.  With that said- I stopped my prescribed cholesterol med months ago! Proof is in the pudding so to speak. Oatmeal on a ketogenic diet isn't wise. If you continue to eat that- may make your numbers rise. Do what's best for you. Make sure you do your research- facts and findings so to speak. Your the one working hard at this - we ketogenics can't ingest a bowl of oatment. I would say when your fat adapted - months in- use a small bowl in evening as a carb up - but forwarn- you may feel bloated - gassy and uncomfortable. 😩

  • I started my Keto adventure about 2 months ago and have lost about 12lbs and am 50. I went to my Dr. and she freaked on my total cholesterol at 277 and LDL at 211. My HDL and Triglycerides are both ok. I'll take test again in two months. I feel good and eat lots of healthy fats. I try to educate myself by looking at newer research. I like the journey I'm on and hopefully you will too.

sailor60640 hey there. I would wait more than 2 months. Personally like 6-8. Your body needs time to wake up and really start using the cholesterol on your stream.

sailor60640 not necessarily.  Im afraid you would be wasting your time and money if you tested cholesterol too soon after ketogenic diet. I have done some research and it can take up to a year or more to normalize the levels in your blood-  your keto adapted by now. That just means your body has just started to realize the energy source is cholesterol. It takes time to normalize. Up to you but I can bet money it will be the same or possibly higher then last time. Your doc will then possibly try to get you on a cholesterol med, which is counteractive to your long term goals.  Not sure if you had heart disease or a heart attack but the early readings right now might give your chest pain(anxiety ). I won't get mine tested now. 1 year.

  • I went to my doctor yesterday to discuss my blood work after being  on the keto diet for 4 months! My A1C for diabetes down from 7.4 to 6.3 cholesterol normal total cholesterol 141, LDL 74, triglycerides 76. Everything else good! My vitamin d normal the first time in years as well as my red blood count! My endocrinologist put me on the keto diet of 35 carb grams or less a day! I am not over weight and I exercise! Hang in there it sure worked for me!

Cholesterol is actually way more dynamic than we've previously been lead to believe. We can actually cause our numbers to change drastically with what we eat in just the 3 days leading up to a test. This is an area of study that is on the precipice of major changes in our understanding of how it works and what it does in and for our bodies. That said, most Keto people will see "improvements" in their lipid panel. There is a small percentage that will hyper-respond (have the opposite reaction) but at this point experts in the field of study are questioning and debating whether increased numbers are a bad thing. One thing that seems to be fairly agreed upon is that the important number to look at is the triglyceride to HDL ratio and an ideal number would be under 2.

yatesa12  it's when your body starts using your own body fat for fuel and the fat you ingest. The time frame on this ranges. When your over the "keto flu" and you feel "normal" again, brain clarity - is typically when your keto adapted or "fat " adapted.  Please do some research- this will help you understand the process.

badmojomn hey thanks and of course I will research (!). Have started this while in a house move, so no extra time right now. Do you have an exceptionally good ref link you can recommend?

I am studying/experimenting with this “on myself” right now and have so far found:

    1. Nothing like “keto flu” in that I feel real good mentally physically emotionally while on 12-20 net /day ( just lucky I guess !)

    2. Quick 5# drop over past 8 days on this ( or so). Going fm mid nl BMI 22-23 to BMI 20 and this is the first successful scheme  to accomplish this after abt a year of trying things. Ain’t easy !

    3. Ha ha not just a little “scared” this drop won’t last (!)

    4. At the same time looking at how this bod might do with mixing keto with more like my usual diet on a weekly or monthly basis. “Horrors !” Might say the Keto Club - however my usual diet is organic - fish, veggies, brn rice, oats, a hi protein cereal mix I make w dried cran/ raisins/slivered almonds/Raisin Bran Cheerios - no kidding, soy milk. So pretty darn healthy by other measures.

    5. Wondering if I can get down to 20 BMI, add back a few meals or days eating what’s been usual - start maybe 1 day a week and follow daily weight. If/when #s go up go back to keto. Then many related questions I can share further.

Thanks for reading - interested in what u think and if ur interested in this inquiry, let’s chat further. I think I’ll copy and amend this - enter elsewhere here. Try to collect a few people with this query.

    Thanks ! Take care ...

Totally agree and thanks for posting these details. The whole bit about fat in the media as well as popular literature (yes based on earlier scientific lit) dies seem wrongheaded now. Likely influenced by food industry as we’re finally seeing if we look for it.

Fantastic ! Will be good to look into the endocrinology literature about this. Such a total turn around on diet fm what’s usually advised - will be fascinating to see what’s in there. Will post back. Congrats on finding a doc u can work with like this !

yatesa12 You talk a lot about mixing your diet up and hopefully you will loose.

I found when I did my first diet on 20 net carbs a day losing 50 lbs in 8 months. You can't add high carbs like oatmeal wil high sugar raisins. I imagine it's ok if you have to loose 10-20 lbs, but for someone addicted to sugar this can get them back to cravings and it will for sure kick you out of Ketones for fuel. (Although ketones is the burn off, like ashes from fat being used for energy).  I know it doesn't work... Thanksgiving with the family once, when I thought I have a pie, caused me 3 days to get back into Ketosis and a week to drop pounds again.

I wish you good luck, but oatmeal and raisins, is not for me.

Steady and sticking to it is a Super Power.

I do see ur point, Imoran60 and this is what I thought abt Atkins when that first came out. I’m essentially a non-tox/organic fish and vegie eater - real healthy ‘cept the IPA ( beer) we like to add (!). I can see how some folks might not do well with this long term - esp those with arterial plaque diseases (heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, etc ). If it’s truly a “new wave” in healthy eating, well then much to be known further.

I am experimenting with this already to see just how many keto days/week or month I’ll need to keep weight dropping - and then eventually to just keep it down.  Ha ha that might actually just mean how many break/“cheat” days / week or month I can get by with (!).

Related, how quickly I can go back into keto ( using testing strips). And how many keto++ days supports scale maintenance or further drop.

Had a celebratory “ cheat “ lunch yesterday (40 or so net carbs) and this day will go uber ketogenic - with 2 eggs, 2 sl cheese, plenty butter and then just salmon/ coconut oil / hot sauce rest of day. If anything else calls me, maybe some salad greens or spinach and olive oil/lemon/hot sauce w no sugar. Will see if this tests keto + by night time and tomorrow morning.

Will report !  I would like to try to integrate this with what we’ve thought to be heart healthy and probably is indeed ( the fish, whole grains, veggies etc )

KBG that's true! yatesa12 what is not healthy about Meat, Vegetables and salads that have been cooked at your home and you know what's in it? Of course it works, you said you're a Doc, why not take people follow them and see how their blood work improves. Dr Adikins did that. He was a Cardiac Doctor. There is a lot of research out there that support the numbers. Medical magazines, research on different people, books...

This is my last post, I don't come here about talking about cheating and asking if it works, because if you don't cheat it WORKS. I'm sure that the ladies and gentlemen that have to loose 30- 100 pounds, it's not helping them that there is an Oatmeal raisins cheater. lol Y'all have a good one!

yatesa12 I honestly don't know where to start - i forgot your BMI was really low to begin with. Most of us I'm assuming have a BMI a lot higher than yours. I wish I had a BMI of yours ! With that said look at body building people on keto on YouTube. If you don't find time to research that, be careful with macros and exercising. Your already thin. I really can't imagine you have much body fat on your frame at the moment. I would also imagine building more muscle will bring out your shape better. Good luck.
