Protein problem

Hello there. I’m super news to Keto but keen to get it right. I seem to be way over on my protein. Has anyone got any top tips of how the heck to do Keto without going over on protein? As cutting out carbs and protein seems impossible 😬

Hi Tezza,  Are you looking for the foods you want to eat before you eat them? That is what I am finding helps. Or maybe changing the amount to keep the carbs down. Vegetables seem to have a lot more carbs then I thought so I make sure I weight everything. I am struggling with keeping protein down too but I am getting better at it. Again, researching foods, adding to daily menu and then adjusting the amounts or changing what I am eating. It does get easier.

It is hard to balance your macros at first.  Tria gave you good advice.  Meal planning and entering food in the app before eating are how I did it.  That way you still have time to adjust portions or change to another food that better meets your Macro goals if needed.

  • Gina thank you also. You were both stop on. Today I used the scan feature on the app to adjust what I ate according to how it fit in with my plan and succeeded. Chuffed to bits. Again - thank you very much.

I am so glad it helped. I am in the learning stages too. Protein is a problem for me also. I have to learn to control my portion better which is actually happening naturally. I am not as hungry as when I first started. Eating 2 meals a day now with fasting 16 hours and eating within the 8 hour window.

  • Arrrh - haven’t gotten my head around the fasting part of it yet either so that’s super helpful too. Thank you very much. If you have any other wonderful nuggets of wisdom in your wonderfully summarised way I’m all ears and eager to learn.

That is so true. When I started I thought veg was pretty much free, but I daily found my carbs over the top because I was eating too much spinach and cauliflower (and no starches - just veg and flax seeds

  • TezzaGHall  If you think about fasting like this it might help. I stop eating at 6 PM and don't eat again until 9 am.  That gives me 15 hours of fasting.  I have gone as long as 21 hours but find no real need to yet.

I agree with Deb. Fasting has been the easiest part for me.  Most times I am not even hungry in the morning when I first get up. I think a lot of that is getting enough fat in your diet too and you stay full longer. The first couple days when I got up I was struggling as I didn't even have coffee until my 16 hours was up and only water because I like cream in my coffee. I now pretty much eat 2 meals a day. Breakfast/lunch around 10 or 11 depending when I eat supper. Then supper which I try to eat between 5 and 6 pm. I always eat before 7 at the latest so I can eat earlier in the morning. Maybe every 3 or 4 days, I might have a snack in the afternoon but lots of times I don't. Again, depending on what I have for breakfast.

I find myself adjusting what I thought I would be having for the day. Might not be in the mood for something or had too much protein for breakfast so cut back on supper. I think you have to find what works for you. As I am home all day, I am probably more flexible then a lot of people.

I am only about 1 month in on this. I am finding it the easiest diet change in my life I have ever tried and I have tried a lot. It may be because I reached the breaking point and couldn't stand where I was headed. My Mom had so many health problems and I looked in the mirror and saw my Mom overweight and said I can't be like this.  I have to do something. I have always had a problem with will power but this time I feel like I can do this.

    I hope you can too.!
