Confused about total vs net carbs

I’m so confused. I understand what total carbs are and what net carbs are, but if CM says I need 18 total carbs per day, how do I calculate how many net carbs I should have? I found where you can have the app track net instead of total, but it told me I was over when I had just 2 net carbs so that couldn’t be right. Can anyone give me some guidance on how to figure my allotted net carbs? Thank you.

  • I am quite confused like you. My settings are for my present weight and I am allowed 13 gr net carbs a day. Yet, I have not lost a pound for ages... Carbs add up very fast but I do what I have to do and don't go over. I am really wondering about how to count the carbs. Some say not more than 20 gr total per day, others say follow your CM macros... If someone knows, please share.

  • Most people can get into ketosis with less then 50g of carbs per day. The reason people choose less then 20g is because you get into ketosis faster.

The formula for net carbs can be confusing because there are a lot of things you can subtract from total carbs to get net carbs. the formula is something like this

netcarbs = Total carbs - dietary fiber -  any artificial sweeteners that are listed in the carb catigory. such as erythritol.

I would always go by net carbs instead of total carbs because the dietary fiber doesn't get digested.

The best way to keep yourself from getting confused would be to stop eating processed food (or foods with an ingredient list) and limit your consumption of root vegetables (vegetables that grow underground)
