Serious help and advice needed

Hi all, I’m in need of some help and advice.  Here’s the situation.  I’ve just come back from a three week holiday, which included beers and chill time. Prior to that I would quite happily cycle 500miles a month, normally 20-60 miles per ride. Having returned from holiday I’ve decided to try Keto. 5 days in to the diet I’ve tried cycling twice 25 miles per ride, and each time I get 10 miles in and I’m knackered! Almost at the point of hitting the wall.  I don’t cycle slow, but is this a factor of my new diet, or that I’ve had three weeks off (I’ve had breaks before).  I’ve been hitting the macros for each group each day.  So my question is; are my physical goals suited to Keto, or do I just need more time to adjust? BTW I’ve lost 4lbs in the first 5 days (probably water).

Thanks

I am an avid cyclist myself. Doing 30 - 80 km rides, so I am familiar with this effect.

You are still very early into the diet, your body is probably producing lots of ketones but the cells have not fully adapted yet to using them yet. Try doing LSD (long slow distance) rides for a couple more weeks. The power and strength will return. Once the cells get used to the fact that they aren't going to have much glucose to work with they will convert over to using the ketones.

Andrew Meyer Thanks great, thank you.  This may be a classic case of having to take 1 step back, in order to take 2 forward.

I think you are right in your thought process of taking one step back/two forward. I started a very loose Keto diet last week knowing Inwould be going into the 4th of July holiday here in the U.S. and wanted that day as a send off to my old diet and drinking habits. I hit it hard on the 5th and have hit my goals each day. I don’t yet know if I’ve lost any weight over the past 5 days but I went to the gym to lift today and could only move 1/4 of the amount of weight I had been doing the week before. I, too,  am assuming that this will subside and that I’ll also start to see some results soon.

Give the biking a break until you actually get into the diet. I was a little weak at the start too but now it's like, BANG! I only eat a snack and one meal per day and routinely exercise (mainly swimming) on an empty stomach. Your body is making a BIG change and by humping on the bike i think your being a little hard on your body. Lost 42 lbs in 13 weeks on my way to 65-70. Once you make the change over you will be thrilled.
