Wondering about macros when working out

So I workout almost everyday.  This adds to the amount of “carbs” allowed as well as calories. Should I still stick to the amount before it takes off carbs after my workout? I don’t want to over eat! I just wonder if it’s better to stick to the macros from before workout or the ones after?

  • I would like to know the answer to this great question also.  It seems that i’m Making good progress daily working down my macros until it sync’s with my FitBit, then I see that i’m Under in all categories usually by end of day.  Because i’m In Ketosis and not very hungry, it seems silly to eat more food just to try and work down those macros.

I would try to stay under 50 g of carbs at the very least, preferably even 20 g, regardless of how many calories you have burned. The reason is that the carbs will get converted into sugars and the increase in sugars will cause an insulin response which in turn turns off ketone production until the insulin levels drop again.

The only way the sugars can get processed (by the vast majority of cells) is with insulin. Without insulin the sugars just stay in the blood. That is why diabetics need insulin injections, without that their blood sugar levels just continue to rise as the cells can't get the sugars inside without the help of insulin to transport it across the cell membrane.

Diabetics can go into a sever state of ketosis known a ketoacidosis. A rather over generalized description of why would be: because the cells are starving since they can't use the sugar in the blood the liver goes into overdrive producing ketones. The over production of ketones cause the blood PH to get too acidic and that in turn causes other metablic failures to occur. In a normal person the body will still produce sugars and insulin which helps to regulate both the uptake of sugars into cells and the insulin will down regulate the production of ketones.

Without insulin the ketone production is essentially a runaway train (highly simplified).

  • Andrew Meyer Andrew Meyer thank you for the answer. I do try and stay in my macros before working out. I wanted to know because I seem to have  plateaued. I don’t go over 20 net carbs and I’m drinking water but can’t seem to get into  ketosis. Going to keep going though, I’m not giving up. I just needed to make sure about the carbs and calories so thank you!
