Newbie & Scared

Hey folks, I’ve had the app on my phone since the Spring after coming back from a DR appointment showing  too-high blood sugar levels and triglycerides levels. And I’ve since gained 5 more pounds. Sigh. I’ve always struggled with my weight but I’m now at my highest weight while not pregnant ever. I’ve tried Whole30 before and Weight Watchers. I do okay the first couple days but my two biggest challenges are: (1) I don’t really cook at home at all and (2) I eat to soothe stress/boredom/sadness/any uncomfortable feeling really. I don’t really care about losing weight for looks anymore—I’m worried about my health and being around to take care of my 2 kids. I’ve tried and failed at losing weight so many times in the past, it feels a little hopeless.  I know I need to change. I want to change. It’s a little overwhelming to be honest though.

Hi my name is Diane and I love your honesty. I started this diet in August and I can tell you that it works. My A1C came down from 8 to 6.3. And my triglycerides dropped over 100 points. I am 69 and did not want to spend another 20 years on diabetic meds. This has been so life changing for me. I have lost only 10 pounds since I started but the trade off of better health has been so worth it. I am now going to the gym (which I have always loved) and have added new friends thru this app and my Fitbit. It gets easier once you figure out your triggers and deal with them in a new way. Hope all goes well for you and I’m hear if you need to chat. Blessings.

  • dwhite262 thanks Diane for the warm welcome! I just ordered Obesity Code by Jason Fung to better understand the diet/lifestyle and am expecting it today. I've also been reading a lot of "Whole 30" type books and cook books. Any resources you've found helpful?

I actually haven’t read anything except a couple keto diet plans books. I have asked about not getting into ketosis even though I strictly follow the plan. No one has been able to tell me why. I have come to the conclusion that it has to do with my diabetes and my age. I can just barely get into ketosis - nearly turns pink. My doc thinks I am breathing out more ketones than peeing them out. I just gave up and have continued to follow the plan. I’m happy with what I am doing.

dwhite262 The absolute best way to measure your ketones is through the blood. I bought a Keto Mojo meter (which can measure both blood glucose and blood ketones (with different strips)).

The urine strips only measure ketones that your body is expelling, unused ketones. As your body becomes fat adapted, it'll burn those ketones rather than expel them. It isn't a good means to measure how many ketones your body is actually using.

The breath analyzer only measures the acetone byproduct, again not a great way to measure nutritional ketosis.

Trixie1975 I watch a few different YouTube channels for information on the Keto lifestyle, those include: Dr Eric Berg, KenBerryMD, Thomas DeLauer, Keto Connect, and 2FitDocs.

    One word... Insulin.
It's all about insulin and insulin resistance. And what drives insulin? Glucose.
To PERMANENTLY lose weight read the book "The Obesity Code" by Dr. Jason Fung
Also, watch Dr. Peter Attia's TEDx talk, "Is the obesity crisis hiding a bigger problem"

  • crgrove Thank you. I just read Dr. Fung's Obesity Code and it was amazing. It made a lot of sense. I liked his common sense approach about talking about what most major diets have in common as well as the science behind trying to counteract the years of insulin resistance through fasting.

Have you tried switching to a warm drink with no sugar sweetener and no carb flavors instead of food when you feel like you want to eat something?

I also use sugar free hard candy to suck on. That might work for you as well.

  • I'm new here too and we are in the right place to gain support from one another. I know that whatever goals we have, we can achieve it and we can find success with the right support community. Good luck to us.
