Does drinking lots of Diet Coke hurt the weight-loss effectiveness of eating less carbs?

I've dropped 40 lbs now by doing my own carb cutting & I have noticed that if I cheat a little, it definitely ends my losing weight. But I've simply stopped losing weight even though I've been basically stuck on Atkins Phase 1 type ketosis eating for about 8 months. I do drink numerous Diet Cokes during the day with my mixed nuts & Atkins snack bars.

20 years ago I did this same diet but maybe with only drinking water, I forget, and after a while my wife had to talk me into eating some carbs when we noticed my hair was thinning out.

So, I'm just needing help to kick-start my weight loss again. I'll admit that I'm living a more sedentary lifestyle now than 20 years ago 😉

But I'm honestly stuck at 185 lbs after losing 40. My goal is 170-175.

Would switching to just drinking water do it or is there anything else I can do?

There is supposedly a corollary between drinking diet soda and being overweight, although the explanations I've heard for it don't jive for me.  I'd suggest cutting it out for a week and seeing what happens. I've also heard other people suggest cutting out dairy for a week to break a plateau. Congratulations on being so close to your goal.

Thanks, we all need congrats every now & then. It does bother me that I've stopped losing weight. Since I'm not having any of the hair thinning that I had happen years ago in my first major DIY Atkins diet, decades ago, when I stayed in the Phase 1 Ketosis (under 20g carbs/day) for too long, it sure makes me think that I'm getting carbs from somewhere without even knowing where. That's what makes me think that I'm doing something wrong, either it's my fault or maybe companies are now sneaking something into foods these days that act like carbs to your body but that make them taste better.
It's crazy but since my 24 year old son doesn't worry about carbs and he drinks more Diet Coke than I do and yet he's thin as a rail, it's hard to convince myself that this has anything to do with what I'm eating. But, I do live a much more sedentary lifestyle than I did back then & than he does now. Maybe that's all there is to it?
As far as dairy products, I have always considered them bad as far as carbs go so I don't drink any milk or eat ice cream. I do have a few sticks of string cheese or slices of sharp cheddar for snacks almost every day when I get tired of snacking on my roasted mixed nuts or Atkin's Snack Bars.
Not that you asked but I don't drink any beer at all. But I did just see an ad on TV tonight for Corona Premier that said it is low carbs at only 2.6g per can. That's interesting. I've never noticed how bad other beer is but I bet that's pretty good, especially if they're advertising it. :-)

Jeff Davis I'm only 1/3rd of the way to my goal, I'm looking forward to being where you are.  I haven't had any major stalls or setbacks yet (knock on wood), but I am storing the suggestions of others for future reference. I think the cutting dairy suggestion was all dairy, milk, cream, cheese, butter.   I drink diet root beer as a treat when I have friends over, maybe one can a week.  And I sometimes get a big diet soda at the movies, maybe twice a month.  Best if luck in breaking your stall.

Moondrake, keep going, it works unbelievably well. I've got to guess that most other diet programs hate the fact that simply cutting carbs can work so easily. Even the workers at my LA Fitness place shudder a little when you mention doing Atkins Phase 1 with eating as few carbs as possible for a while.  They're all taught that the body needs carbs to produce energy and I guess that's probably right.
I have heard that men have an easier time doing the Atkins diet than women do for some reason that's physical. Some women's body's just must need the carbs to be happy. I don't think it is psychological or anything. My wife tried it and she couldn't keep it up since it made her feel bad.
Again, I know that something must be going wrong with what I'm doing since my hair isn't thinning like it did 20 years ago when I stayed in this Atkins Phase 1 Ketosis thing trying to stay under 20 grams of carbs a day.
As I said, maybe I'm messing up a little with Diet Coke or something. I try to be really careful with everything I eat, making sure that any salads don't have any beans, rice or corn in them. Basically, anything white is a NO-NO for me, pasta, bread, milk and others, along with anything that has sugar in it or says it has carbs in the label.

I don't follow anything other Atkins plan or anything else. I just do my thing and it works but it's stopped for some odd reason. That's why I came to this site to ask my question.

I'm the dad in this PIC with my 2 college kids who go to Cal State Fullerton and UCLA. My daughter's boyfriend, who is also in this PIC, goes to UCLA too.

Jeff Davis thanks for the encouragement. I'm on a mini hiatus right now, still following keto food selections, but not counting carbs or calories as I am visiting my sister in Austin. I'm reasonably sure that my calories are well within my goals, but protein is probably high, and carbs maybe high as I'm eating a fair amount of vegetables. But I've been craving vegetables for a long time, so letting my body have some for a little while might be a good idea. Before I started with keto and was used to eating at least a pound of vegetables a day. With keto I've had to cut that back to 4 to 6 oz.  I won't get to see my scale again for another few days, but my clothes feel like they're hanging off of me.  The jeans I bought last week are having to constantly be pulled up, so it seems that all is well.

Moondrake GET BACK AT IT!!!! There's no vacations on diets. You should know that.  Those Texans aren't all bad so have her help you. 😉
I don't know anything about doing keto since I'm just a cut carbs, Atkins dude. Why do you cut back on veggies doing a keto diet?
It's cool that your clothes are telling you that things are still working. You bought jeans last week and they're already too loose?

Jeff Davis I'm not really off the diet, I'm just off of counting carbs and calories for a bit. Vegetables are all carbs, you can't fit 1lb of vegetables into 15 net carbs. My sister's not much help with the diet because her problem is the opposite of mine, she's five foot eleven and weighs about 100 lbs. Recently she was down to 89lbs. She has a lot of trouble keeping weight on, so she has to eat as many stick to your ribs calories as she can.  She's embarrassed to go out in public because she's so thin, a totally different battle with weight than mine.  We have a deal, I'm going to give her 25 lbs and 4 years and she's going to give me 4 inches of leg. LOL. She's jealous because I can buy pants off the rack and have them fit, and I'm jealous because she's got legs for days.  If only that deal were possible we'd both be happier and healthier.   I'm making grilled chicken and homemade Alfredo sauce for dinner tonight, hers will go on pasta and mine on zucchini spirals.

Hi friends. I read if you’re at a plateau, stalled weight loss, cut crabs to just 10/day until it moves again.  No cal drinks supposedly create a short lived insulin response, taste buds send sugar warning to the brain, which then shoots out a bit of insulin to remove the supposed sugar, when none is detected at the cell receptors, insulin drops again and all is well. Except that insulin put whatever you ate with the soda into fat storage.   Even if it was a small amount of nuts.  Try having chicharones with melted butter as a snack.

  • Hey Jeff, sorry about your situation! I know it can be frustrating! I've also done diets like this in the past. I have found that when my weight loss stalls it helps to actually eat normal for a couple of days and then start again. Just don't go crazy on carbs! Maybe just do 50-75 a day, I've read that this confuses your metabolism. Don't know if that part is true but it does help me!! As far as the diet Coke I'm not sure, I drink 1 sometimes 2 diet mountain dews a day and plenty if water!! The key for me has been lots of water!! Hope this helps!! Btw you look great, keep up the hard work!!!
