Need to up my calories

So I just ended week two. Down another 4 lbs. yea me! But I’m struggling with my calorie intake. The last 7 day calorie intake is...889, 2261, 523, 1108, 770, 929, 505. Any ideas on what I can eat that are higher in calories but still low carb?  Someone told me my calorie intake should be about 1200 a day

  • Try googling "fat bombs"--those should help :-)

  • julie573294222 Hey my motto is why worry? If your not hungry don’t eat. Some days you may just be hungrier then others. Let it ride. You should be entering fat adaption now or soon, don’t stress about calories. Just focus on total carb intake. Listen to your body. Some days I find I’m not hardly eating much. I’m just not hungry.

  • I’m pretty new also. I lost 5 lbs first week and nothing the next 2 weeks. Net carbs are good at between 18 and 21. Noticed my calories are jumping around from 700 to 1300. Is this the problem? Do my net calories for the day have to be negative ( more burned than eaten ) to lose weight? And if so why am I not just counting calories? Any thoughts?

  • Sandie76 No, you don't have to count calories. That's the beauty of low-carb. That said, your calorie level is kind of low, in my opinion, and I personally have noticed that if my calories go below 1500, my weight loss stalls. I can only suppose my body goes into starvation mode. The sweet spot for me is 1800 - 2000 calories per day, but your mileage may vary.

  • Sandie76 Also, now that I think about it, it's possible your macros may be off. Fat tends to up your calorie consumption, so I'm thinking at 700 calories per day, or even 1300, you may not be getting enough fat. Can you post a sample day's menu and also your fat / protein / carb ratios? (i.e. what percent of your calories are from fat, from protein, from carbs).

  • Sandie76 Anne Victory thanks for responding- yes that makes sense about starvation mode. I think because I’m New I am eating primarily protein and veggies because I really don’t know what else to eat! I had an apple the other day before I looked at its net carbs and was shocked!

  • I don’t bother with calories.  If you are not hungry then you are well fed no matter what the calories say.  I typically eat under 1000 calories each day but since I am not hungry I guess I don’t need more.  Your body tells you when you need food!  If it’s not saying “feed me” then don’t.  Some days I barely eat 500 calories.  Who cares!  And I have a heart condition and am under the care of a cardiologist.  He’d soon tell me if my low carbs were dangerous.  Listen to your body.  That means if you have eaten more and you are still genuinely hungry then you shouldn’t worry about eating too many calories either.

  • People are so hung up on this starvation mode myth that it’s very hard to get people to stop the nonsense.  This starvation mode myth comes from an extremely old study of some men on a low calorie diet - Minnesota experiment.  Research that.  And take a look at the men in starvation mode.  They are in starvation mode because they are STARVING!   Get it?  They are actually starving.  I don’t think anybody here has actually been starving I. Their entire lives unless some people here are Ethiopians.  If you have any fat on your body, which obviously all of us do as we are trying to lose weight, then you are not in starvation mode.  You are not starving.  In starvation mode you do not have any fat left on your body at all and you have no reserves left so your body is forced to begin eating muscle and organs to survive.  Your body will NOT do this until all your fat reserves are gone completely.  There is no point in your body storing fat to use when times are tough and then leaving the fat there to eat itself and your muscles and organs instead.  It eats the fat first.  When all the fat is gone from your body it goes into starvation mode.  It doesn’t matter if you eat 0 calories, it will not go into starvation mode unless you have no fat to eat off your reserves.  Please people, stop talking about being in starvation mode.  It hasn’t happened.

  • Queen of Sheba , nobody said anyone is starving or that their body is "eating" itself. That is not what I, or most people, mean when they say "starvation mode." I'd appreciate you not putting words in my mouth. I NEVER said anything about low calorie intake being dangerous or the body eating its own tissue (which it can also do if you're on a low-fat diet, for what it's worth).

I also theorized (pure theory since the OP never posted what she typically eats in a day) that perhaps she isn't eating enough fat since that would up her caloric intake.  I have seen many people get in the mindset that they need to control their carbs AND their calories and / or fat, but generally speaking if you're doing low-carb (especially ketogenic) all you need to worry about is your carb intake and fat ratios and the calories will naturally sort themselves out. But as with most things, YMMV.

  • Queen of Sheba  Considering that I was the one to use the phrase "starvation mode," who else would I think your rant was directed at? Your post came across as being very combative and condescending whether you intended for it to or not, which is one of the ways internet kerfuffles get started.

  • Arkali, I have reread my post and I see that you are right.  I am very sorry if my post felt like it was directed at you and while it’s true that I do not have control over your thought processes and interpretations what we write can and does affect others.  Please accept my apology.  The post was not directed at you, but I see xactly why you would think so.  I will try to be more careful in the future.  Have a lovely and happy day. 😘

  • Queen of Sheba Thank you so much. And I apologize too--I was having a horrible week (my daddy had just passed away) and was probably way oversensitive about everything. Just another example of how easy it is to get into misunderstandings on the internet. And thank you for the links, by the way--they were very informative :-)
