Hi, let me present myself

I am 70 years old and I live in Châteauguay, Québec, Canada. Last Christmas, I was 226 pounds and the holidays were not over!! I had to do something about my weight and on a TV program, I heard about the ketogenic diet. Some were against it but others had followed it and had lost a lot of weight, pictures to prove it. So, I decided I would give it a try: it was going to be the last time that I would go on a diet, I had too much deceptions and I had gone through the yo-yos of dieting, getting back the weight, tears, depressions, pain of having to buy larger clothes, knee pains etc...

So, after a few days of trying the diet, my scale indicated this:

and 2 weeks ago, it was this:

There is hope!!! For the first time since before year 2000, I am back in the 190 pounds. Pretty soon, my scale will indicate numbers in the 180 pounds, then 170 and so on until I reach my final goal. Last June, I went for some blood tests that my doctor had prescribed after Christmas. She phoned me the week after, asking what I was doing different from the previous visit at her office because all my blood tests were very good, bad cholesterol down, blood sugar down, etc.. I asked her if I could go on with the keto diet and she said 'whatever you are doing, continue to do it because it is working fine for you'!!

I hope that this will help others in this forum... I look forward to reading your stories too.

I'd be happy to shAre my progress and hear yours. Shelley Renee from Idaho USA

  • Hi Shelly! Yes, my toes don't look the same because I used made a copy/paste image of my latest picture to get it into the same size of the previous picture, so that it would not take too much space. In reality, what was important for me was the number on the scale. I am down to 194.5 lbs this morning. Yes, we sure can help each other in this keto adventure!!!

Congratulations!  I am into my 60's and know that losing is different for those of us who are no longer in our 30's & 40's.  You are an inspiration for sure!

  • Shelly Renae  You must be so proud of yourself!!! I never thought that I would find it easy to lose weight until I started the keto diet. I don't suffer from unger between meals. With the other diets that I followed before - and I did them all, believe me - food was always on my mind, and I believe that this is why I would eventually stop following them, I felt too much frustrated. The keto diet has become like a lifestyle now, and I know what is good for me now. Is it the same for you?

  • Lesa  Thank you Lesa!  I think it is not a matter of age, it is the desire to regain control over our body, sort of. Yes, it may take a bit longer to attain our goals but we are on the right tract for sure.

    Maigrichonne Maigrichonne

You are rocking it! There are parts of me getting smaller that I’ve never thought about. My feet, my head, new shoes and glasses were a must! Let’s get through one more day!

Maigrichonne Yes, on the right track most definitely.  But, I have found that with age my metabolism has really taken a nose-dive so I am conscious of doing things to keep my metabolism up.

  • Allô Maigrichonne, Hi girls! I’m in my 60’s as well, 68 on Saturday and in the last 10 years I’ve gained 70 pounds: lost my job, breakdown, quit smoking. All that was on my mind was eating and mostly sugar. I started keto around mid or end of May, I’m not sure, because I didn’t really believe it would work so I didn’t take notes.

But after a few weeks I was amazed at how great I was feeling, I had more energy, less pain in my knees, better sleep, happier! Yep all of that in a few weeks. This diet has become a way of life for me and I hope I’ll stick to it for the rest of my life.

So far I’ve lost 20 pounds, although I guess 10 pounds were water as I was really bloated, it’s been very, very hot and humid here in Montreal this summer and I don’t have air conditioned so...

I have a problem meeting my macros, because I’m not hungry, part of it because of the heat, part because I never ate a lot. So I have a bullet coffee every morning with butter, coconut oil and heavy cream (for the fats) and a protein shake that I do myself with whey isolat, cocoa powder, stevia and unsweetened almond milk (for my proteins) and even with that I don’t meet my macros most of the time.  Oh well at least I stick to 75/80% fats, 15/20% proteins and 5/10% carbs. Unfortunately, I’m usually between 900 and 1000 calories per day.

Okay  ow, before you get tired of reading my  novel, I wish you a very good Thursday and I hope to hear from you soon. Let’s stick together girls. We can do this.

  • Francine Lagace  What a nice story. It ressembles mine: knee pain at a point where I could not even take a nice evening walk with my grandchildren, around the block. I am not the same person now  and I know that I can walk now for at least 30 min without thinking ''oh-oh! my knee again''!! This hot weather in Montreal has helped me for drinking lots of water.  Love to read your stories!!

  • Coucou Maigrichonne, how are you? Will you be back to keto quebecoise or have you decided to quit the group?

  • Lesa  Yes, at our age , things are a bit different than when we were younger. I watched a few videos from Casey Durango on youtube and she helped me a lot in understanding what made us become fatter and fatter... She also gives inspirational recipes on what she ate that day and that helps also.

  • Francine Lagace  No question of leaving. but my ex-brother-in-law is now working to help us in some house renovations and I am outside nearly all day long this week. With the hot weather, I am drained out when he leaves around 4 pm. I then have a shower and make a little nap before supper.  I don't know how this group works for replies...
