sugar alcohol

i believe i read somewhere sugar alcohol is to be avoided. However, I bought some Atkins treats with sugar alcohol, scanned and they came up as Grade A. I thought they would have come up as Grade F.

  • This from Atkins site makes me question the bars getting an A. Sugar alcohols are not fully absorbed by the gut, which means they provide roughly half the calories that sugar does. ... To calculate Net Carb count with sugar alcohols, simply subtract grams of sugar alcohols (including glycerin), as well as fiber, from total grams of carbs.

This is no good if you're a fat-burner as it might kick you out of ketosis. The safe and keto-friendly sugar alcohol to use in moderation is Erythritol. ... Erythritol is a good option for keto because it has no impact on your blood sugar levels. It has a GI of zero and also contains very few calories.Jul 12, 2018

  • dmmrtn56 I am trying to stay away from prepackaged food but some folks don't have that luxury.   You would think Atkins would be ok but from what I copied and pasted I would say it is a toss up. Sorry I can not answer maybe someone else can

I think some can eat small amounts and stay in ketosis; however, others react differently and are knocked out.  Also, while I focus on net carbs, I keep an eye on total carbs and don’t let them get very high.  You could quickly end up with a big discrepancy between Net and Total Carbs with some of these treats. I would view them as an occasional indulgence at best.

With Atkins (or any other foods), avoid anything with maltodextrin.

  • Curious why sugars aren’t tracked on the app?  Those are hugely important also.

Msrobnhood If you go to the "in-depth" tab on your "daily log", it shows the breakdown of sugars, added sugars, and sugar alcohol in your daily food intake. If you go to a particular recipe in your Foods, if you scroll down at the very bottom there is a nutritional breakdown which also includes these items for that recipe.
