Help a keto friend out...

I’ve been a lurker in these posts but first time posting. I’m really struggling with the whole keto way of life. I just can’t seem to get myself into ketosis. I’ve been working at this off and on for many months but very committed for three months. I am 51 years old and not sure if it’s just a battle against menopause or if I really am not grasping the whole way of eating and incorporating the correct amount of macros. Anyone else in this category finding success and if so what are some great pieces of advice?

I guess I have alot of questions for you, before I can actually respond with thought.

What exactly are you not grasping about the way of eating? Are you keeping your net carbs low? What does your macros say, and are you keeping them under their limits? How do you know you are not in ketosis?

Dont give up...let's determine what the issue is and see if we can find a way forward.

How do you know you're not in ketosis? Are you testing? If so, which method and how often?

Hi!  I am turning 50 in 2 weeks, so I'm right there with you.  I've been eating Keto and doing intermittent fasting for 4 years (off and on).  I would advise that you make sure that you are not eating too much protein and increase fat intake.   Alot of people don't realize the amount of fat they have to consume in order to stay in ketosis and they push themselves out of ketosis by consuming too much protein.

Like the others have stated, you don’t give us much to work with.

So let me start here: If you haven’t already done so, I’d HIGHLY recommend that you read ‘Learn About Keto’ (ALL of the articles found there) located at the bottom of the list to the left side of your screen, followed by ‘KetoGenius Diet Plan’ (a .pdf file that you can save and print) found about half way down the list.

Both do an outstanding job of explaining the science behind keto and should give you a good understanding.

Once you’ve done that, ask any questions you still have - this is a great place for advice and support.

Hope this helps and good luck

  • I know this is a bit late -- and I'm not sure how you are doing in your progress. But, when I came here I decided I'd start with a low-carb instead of trying to do Keto and it has helped me learn a lot. Though some days I hit Keto numbers, for the most part I keep my carbs to 30-50.  Probably slower progress overall but I am reaching goals, making better choices and learning about long-term options.  I've been doing this through the holiday season which I consider a win as well.  Choose the path that works for you, knowing you can change it as you move forward.
