Macros on Intermittent Fasting and Keto

Here is one thing I can't seem to get a clear answer on regarding Intermittent Fasting. If you are doing it to lose weight on Keto, are you supposed to then consume all of your macros, or not?  I realize much of the documentation out there talks about "calorie reduction", but I am already doing a 25% calorie deficit on Keto. So I am just not clear.

Thanks All!

Joel

No, you need not eat all your macros.  Indeed, eat only if/when you’re hungry.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

  • Thanks, @pat_f, its not so much need I do so, I guess what I am really asking is "can I?", or is the idea to reduce calorie intake even further?

There’s some newer news regarding calorie reduction over the last several years.  ‘Move more, eat less’ has been well and thoroughly debunked; cutting calories only serves to notify the body to throttle back on metabolism to match the reduced calorie intake.  So the notion of reducing calories on a diet may no longer be valid.  Check out Dr Jason Fung on Youtube for the science behind it.

    I hope this helps.

I'd just shoot for not eating any carbs and you would naturally fall under the 20g threshold. Then eat more fatty cuts of meat and healthy fat relative to lean protein rich food.

Eat until you are satisfied. No need to reduce calories. That will never work as a long term solution anyway.

I agree with Pat F - watch some of Dr. Jason Fung's videos on Youtube. There are some other ones that are great as well. I've just started combining IF (intermittent Fasting) with Keto and the way I do it is:  3x a week I stop eating at 7 p.m. and then have my next meal about 6 p.m the next day.  My 6 p.m meal is Keto - nothing crazy - just very low carb,  some protein, and high healthy fats. Sometimes I'll throw a Keto desert recipe in that I've been wanting to try. The very next day I go back on Keto and follow my macros.  This works for me - hope it helps with your question.

  • If you are doing intermittent fasting you still consume all your calories for the day. You just consume them in a small time frame. For example From the time you eat your first meal to the time you eat your last meal would be a 6 hour window then you would go 18 hours without eating. That gives your body 18 hours to burn fat.  There are different time frames for intermittent fasting 6-18 is just one example. You could do a 8-16 or whatever you decide. Anyway you do it still eat all your calories.
