Frozen Blackberries vs Fresh

I’m new to the Keto world (2/22/2020) and learning.  I recently came across an awesome sale for fresh blackberries and bought a bunch, well, a tonish.

i looked at the carbs of fresh and said I was good and pulled the trigger and bought about 40 pints.  Are a few, entered in to this app and then froze the rest to eat at a later date.

Now I’m starting to dig in to the frozen ones and when I go to enter them in the app is says the same serving size has 16 net carbs.  That’s about 6 more than I usually eat in a whole day.

The Question.  If I purchased the blackberries fresh and froze myself without adding anything, do they have the same amount of net carbs or did they somehow multiply the carb count?

Are frozen blackberries (and blueberries) that terrible for the keto diet?

Thanks in advance.

Sadly, I think somehow the freezing process concentrates the natural sugars. Frozen fruit is a no-no.

  • I've eaten fresh blackberries or raspberries only as my fruit. If you look at a frozen bag of berries in the grocery store, you will see the higher carb count due to the serving size of 1 1/4 cups! The sugar content is listed as zero, but carbs approx. 16. That is due to the amount of berries. I only eat fresh 12-16 berries at one time to avoid a spike or limit carb.  Mine are kept simply refrigerated. Now, fruit that sits and allowed to ripen, can convert the starch to a sugar, so best to eat fruit before that happens.

Actually it does not change the sugar count of your fresh frozen blackberries.

store bought frozen berries and fruit usually have sugar added to them.
    Hope that helps!

wamdesigns thanks for the reply.  So if I got this straight.  I bought the fresh blueberries and blackberries and I was the ones that put them on a tray to individually freeze and then I put them in the baggies and at no point do I add any sugar then the blue or blackberries that I had when they were fresh have the same net carbs as the ones that I personally froze with the ingredients being just those fresh blue or blackberries that I got and froze myself?

Thanks for helping me and your assistance.

  • Warteetee Blueberries have simple sugars of 10 grams per 3.5oz (100 grams) serving, that is why their carbs are at 14.5 for that serving amount. I prefer raspberries, lower in sugar, 5 grams  per serving (123 grams).  Freezing should not alter that number.  Dietary fiber is higher in raspberries/blackberries which helps with net carb count.
