Keto levels

Hi, I’m hoping you guys can help. I have been doing keto for 1 day less than 2 weeks, and I tested with the keto strips yesterday and it says I barely have a trace amount of ketones in my body. I’m so confused because I have stayed under 20 net carbs everyday! Only once did I go over my fat, and then 1 day slightly over my calories. I want to believe the batch I purchased is defective lol, but I’m getting frustrated. Any information or experience would be greatly appreciated!😊

Hey Carly, welcome to the forum!

Typically, it takes about two weeks for someone to get into ketosis so you’re doing fine.   As for ketone testing — you say ‘trace amount’.   Remember: anything .5mmol or above is ketosis; people react differently so just because someone else has a higher number, it means nothing.  Remember: .5mmol or more and you’re good.  Keep it up!

As for ways to stimulate ketosis: you can really cut your carbs back (plan a day with 10 just to see what that looks like; easier than you might think), and make sure to eat plenty of good fats (max your fat macro allowance).  Moderate proteins and try not to exceed your protein macro as excess proteins can be converted to carbs and that defeats the purpose.

And if you haven’t done so, increase your physical activity: gym, a good walk, etc.  The object is to increase your energy burn rate.

Some folks might advise using MCT oil (medium chain triglycerides) to give things a boost, but know this: MCT cannot be stored in the body and must be burned for fuel.  So if you use them to get a boost, what you’ll see (ketone wise) is the burning of the MCT and not necessarily stored body fat.  Just an FYI.  Use them, but don’t go overboard.

Hope this helps and keto on!
