Stalled for a month!

Hello everyone! I have officially been on keto since the 1st of January! I lost weight the first month, but I have had absolutely no luck this past month! I have been stalled for a month now and I don’t know what to do to help break the stall.  I am struggling to meet my fats intake and maybe that could be doing it, I’m not sure. If you have any suggestions as to help break the stall or ideas for fat?  Thank you!

  • It is common to stall. I've stalled for a month before. Make sure your getting enough calories in the day so your not slipping into starvation mode. Hopping your fats can be as easy as using avacado oil or butter to cook with.  But the thing that snapped me out of all my stalls is intermittent fasting.  Finish dinner by 7 or 8 pm and don't eat till noon. That will do the trick. I don't IF all the time but it's a nice change of pace

Hi, i have been on keto since october 2019 and have lost 56lbs so far and feel so much better for it- i now have no joint pain! I have also stalled with weight loss this month even putting on a pound or two then just losing it again. Its disheartening and made me question what im doing wrong. I think from logging my food on the app for the last week  i havent been having enough fat, or drinking enough water, have upped both and today had lost 3 lbs. I guess we are all different and have to find what works for us- so glad i found this app and didnt give up x

Also measure inch-wise...how do your clothes feel? Waist, hips, biceps, etc? Do you do body comp? Feeling stronger, faster, etc? There are some weeks I weigh heavier (on weigh scale) than others but it is muscle gains. The weigh scale is but a number but does may not necessarily interpret reality.

I started on Keto Jan 1st 2020 also.  I don't weigh myself at all because I then become obsessed every day with whether I've lost weight or not and I don't want to get discouraged or an excuse to give up.   I have a lot to lose, so I'm committed to Keto for 2020 at least, but my main reason for choosing Keto is the anti-inflammatory aspect.   I can tell in my clothes that I've lost inches and more importantly my pain level has definitely decreased.  Last weekend I gave myself a break and didn't diet at all and enjoyed some much needed Mexican food and margaritas with friends, no guilt, it was planned,  and I'm back to eating clean for March and using intermittent fasting.  Losing weight is a life-long journey for a lot of us, not a race.   Don't sweat the stalls, take a breath, and just keep at it.   Love this app too!

I’m right there with you!  I’ve been on since October.  I’ve lost 23 pounds but this past month have battled the same two pounds.... up and down.  It’s so frustrating!!!

kissybiz I threw out my scales, too; I want to lose weight, but more than that, I want to become more healthy.  In the past, I've always quit when I hit a long stall, and it never took much because I have small caloric needs.  Like you, I can feel my clothes loosening and I have less pain in my joints.  I take Mg and K supplements and no longer get muscle cramps.  Lately I've been keeping track of my blood sugars.  And always I am tracking my nutrition.  This App makes it all so easy.  I do the Plan and will give it a fair 6 month chance/trial.  Meanwhile, I am working on reducing my insulin resistance.  And becoming less sedentary.  Who has time to wonder about how much weight I'm losing?

Theekaesi, I am sorry you are having trouble.  Me, too.  Don't give up, get a bigger problem, and take a deep breath.  One thing I have learned researching weight loss stalls is that my blood sugar, despite very low carbohydrate consumption (~13 g/day), spikes in the very early hours of the morning - usually to about 120 mg% around 4:40 AM.  I'm not even close to rising and try to stay asleep until 8:00 AM, but I'm wondering what the heck my body is doing with all that sugar if I'm not using it?  My blood sugar is down to normal range by the time I get up, and if I hadn't tested it at 4:30 AM, I would not have known it had gone up.  Could it be that the sugar is getting re-stored as fat?  It would be nice if it got stored as glycogen in my muscles, but my muscles are complaining too much.  Also, my caloric intake is consistently less than 1100 kCal - I am short, old, and lethargic - and it needs to be that low in order for me to be in even a small deficit for weight loss.  I am not hungry and I don't mind the severe calorie restriction, but sometimes I wonder if my body thinks I'm starving it.  Am considering an IF strategy to help kick it out of its resistance to weight loss.  Do any of these ideas make sense to you?  Just keep up your low-carb lifestyle, keep up your nutrition, read all you can, and log what you eat meticulously.  And have blessings.

  • I too am fat, short, old and lethargic. I thought for a long time that I was fat adapted as I have been eating keto for a year now. I went on a week with nothing but fat and mostly beef. Went from that to IF almost every day, 16-18 hours. That kicked me into ketosis again and I have been that way for almost 3 weeks now. I lost 30 lbs when I first started keto last March, stalled out in August, and after I tried IF for about one month, I started loosing again. 3.5 lbs this week. Now I'm not so fat, still short, and older, and waiting for Spring to kick in so I can get outside and keep my "public" distance.

Hi, Bambushka, your post was such good news for me.  The diet CM proposed for me was 13 grams net carbs, 66 grams protein, and 82 grams fat - 1053 kCal/day to lose 2 - 3 lbs per month.  I can work with this, and it keeps me in a fairly constant ketosis.  What I don't see is a whopping big weight loss, but then I was not expecting that.  I've done the IF 16/8 for a few days now, with more frequent spaced out meals; my high-normal blood sugars have dropped and I'm hoping my insulin resistance has dropped as well - which really should make losing weight easier.  I could eat just meat and fat forever - and gain weight.    Keeping my kCals below 1053 is hard, and to me, it allows nowhere near the "hi fat" I am  used to.  I am missing that Tbs of cream in my coffee.  My clothes know the difference, though, and I'm still looking forward to that parsnip next year.  Blessings.

  • Sounds like you are getting it. With a lose of 3.5 lbs last week (full disclosure: I had a molar extracted) I have stayed steady right on the loss. I can't imagine eating the way I use to. Had some "crack" popcorn (chicago mix) with hubs last night and my belly talked to me all night. My glucose went from 108 to 98 last test. Nothing tastes as good as being thinner feels. I am entering into my second year on keto next week.

I am in the same boat.  Have been on keto for 3 mo and have lost 26 lbs and that is great but then nothing.  I have been doing IF for about 2 weeks and no change.  I am under on all of my macros but maybe need to up my water?  Feeling frustrated, Help!

Bambushka, did you have any caloric restrictions on your "just meat and fat" diet?  I can see all sorts of reasons why this should work, especially if you follow up with IF to shock your body out of any adaptation it makes to decreased calorie consumption.  As I've mentioned, I no longer keep scales, so my weight loss is purely "anecdotal" (but today I am wearing clothes I haven't worn in years), and I can sense when I'm in a stall - although it IS hard to tell when my predicted weight loss is only 2-3 lbs. per month.   For the last two months on HFLC my blood sugars have been so boringly normal I'm going to quit checking them for awhile and concentrate on weight loss.  One thing I've learned from doing blood sugars is that Silk unsweetened fortified Soy milk (2 net carbs per cup) has no measurable impact upon my blood glucoses, which is good news for me because (1) it is high in protein and certain vitamins, (2) it is high in Ca++ without all the calories of cheese, and (3) it can be fermented with just a little kefir and made into "yogurt," an even more concentrated superfood source.  I know this is off-topic, but I think it is important to maintain one's nutrition, especially while struggling through weight loss stalls.  The keto-counsel does NOT recommend Soy Milk alternatives to dairy, btw; am just saying.  I am so encouraged by your successes.  I need a few teeth pulled.
