New To Keto

Hi! My name is Megan! I’m 25 years old and I weigh 180lbs. My doctor wants me to start the Keto Diet but didn’t really give me any advice on what to eat. I have done a lot of research to know how the diet works. Could someone point me into the right direction on what food options there are for this diet? Thank you so much!

  • Of course there are hundreds of video and books on how to do Keto.  There are also Keto purists and there are dirty Keto eaters.  There are also those who do a little of both.  Some dirty keto eaters also refer to themselves as lazy keto, too.  The dirty lazy folks usually set a carb limit (say 40 grams) and they will eat whatever as long as the daily intake is no more than 40g.  There are also different levels of purist I would say but most try to stick within a macronutrient range like 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carb.  Most often all carbs are from the good carb category such as vegetables and maybe a carb or two from a dressing or sauce.  Some (maybe most) purist don’t use any artificial sweeteners.  So I guess what I am saying is it depends on how you want to do Keto.  The simplest suggestion I can give you is to use YouTube and search for some videos.  Search dirty lazy keto as well as clean keto and watch.  Decide what you think best suits you.

  • Wow, it's exciting to hear that a doctor recommended Keto!! I am new here also looking for tips and info. I started in November and did research by looking through Keto and low carb related pages on Healthline, DietDoctor, and Ketovale. I also like the simplicity of burnfatnotsugar.com. I am sure there are more. And maybe those are not the best, but you've got to start somewhere! :)

But most especially read up on Keto Flu, Candida Die-off, and Sugar Withdrawal. You may experience some or none of those effects moving forward, but it's best to be aware of them so you know how to mitigate them. Once you come out the other side, it's like being a free woman! I can't believe the control carbs had over me (mindless eating, constant snacking, urges and cravings all day, sugar crashes, etc etc etc). That's all gone now, and my gut health is SIGNIFICANTLY better, sorry for TMI.

Watch a movie on Netflix called One Magic Pill. It will give you the best advice which is to drastically reduce your carb consumption. You will lose weight fast . You will need to continue the diet to maintain your weight. If you have type 1 , you should ask your doctor so your medicine doesn’t take your blood sugar too low after you cut the carbs

Don’t eat bread or any grains , potatoes, corn, sweets, fruit other than berries, Bad oils or any processed or low fat foods. Stay away from artificial sweeteners. Instead, eat meats, salads, leafy green vegetables, avocado, nuts in moderation, butter,

Dont worry about fat consumption. We have been misled since the 1970s when low fat diets were recommended in error. New studies show that what we consume has no effect on the cholesterol in our blood

There are some excellent videos on YouTube to give you some recipes. But, meat and vegetables are your best bet with eggs, avocados, walnuts and macadamia nuts. Salmon, grass-fed beef, chicken wings, thighs and legs, green leafy vegetables, greens, hard cheese like gouda, brie and blue cheese. Pickle wraps with cream cheese and lunch meat, olives and whole milk kefir. MCT oil, butter, and collagen powder are good in some bulletproof coffee.

I find most of my recipes on Pinterest, a lot of them include nutritional information so you know if it is a good choice based on what else you have eaten that day.  I sometimes also log a meal in Carb Manager before I eat to determine how it well effect my Macros for the day.
