Gaining weight

I am seriously struggling on keto. I have only been doing it for 14 days and have been in ketosis the entire time(according to urine test strips). I have also been exercising 3 times a week and successfully doing intermittent fasting. My two daily meals consist of a protein, lots of healthy fats, and a keto friendly veg. My problem is that I am consistently gaining weight. 4lbs to be exact. I am trying to take the advice to stay away from the scales but honestly I need some reassurance that I am not doing this for nothing and that there is hope for me to also enjoy the benefits of weight loss.

ekmanning56 Unfortunately you lost that much, what did you do different in the 2nd  week after you were so successful in week one?

I can't remember where I read it, but week one can show a quick drop because of water weight.  Even though you may be drinking more water, it is passing through your body instead of being stored in fat cells and the fat cells are releasing water too.  I dropped like 8 pounds the first week never to be repeated.  Now it is just a slow grind down on the scale.

ekmanning56  ekm Well if you didn't do anything different, then you are taking in too many carbs.  Question: What times of day do you eat IE: Breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack ... This is very important, give est times.

Karbndall  TW here, You have a Kool name is it Ms or Mr Karbndall. Do you have a GNC near you? Let me know... You have a good understanding about fluid retention. When I mow my lawn I generally loose 2,3, or 4 pounds and my cloths are drenched. Water weight right??? Wrong, If you do the Ketone strip I am dark purple and I don't do anything except drink plain Ice water and make sure I don't eat or drink anything with salt for 24 hours... And Viola it doesn't come back. It's still gone the next day. So ! was it water weight? Yes but if it doesn't come back it's a win win for me...

Found an article with an easy to understand section on the weight loss in the first week or so and how it is water weight.  When you suddenly deprive your body of carbs, the first thing your body does is to deplete your glycogen reserves.  These reserves are stored with approximately a 3:1 ratio of water grams to glycogen grams.  When the glycogen is consumed, the water is released.

Karbndall  Karb n , TW here again, I'm not trying to argue about the 1st week water loss. I was just trying to explain that was what you should use to kick start the program, not give you a reason to celebrate and possibly eat to many carbs and then you  have gained weight the 2nd week, I lost 15 pounds the first 3 weeks. And then I started experimenting and found out in a hurry what I couldn't do.  And I have about 5 "don't even think about it" things I can't do without consequence. I can assure you though , You only get 1 first week water loss. So you can't start over and expect  the water  loss again. It takes 2  Weeks to lose it again. PEACE!

TW Lost 40 Yeah, nobody is arguing.  Certainly not me.  I just emphasized I was speaking to the first week or so.  I did read some more studies on it.  I tried to post a link, but it didn't make it through the review process I guess.  Which is too bad, because there is some good information out there.  One article even coined the phrase "keto flush' for the first couple weeks of weight loss.  Then people plateau and think they are doing something wrong, when it's more of an education thing.  My macro calculation states I should loose about 4 lbs/mo and that's pretty much spot on, after, the initial flush.

Your body is always trying to replace the glycogen stores and the water that goes along with it.  3:1 ratio of water to glycogen.  So, it seems, the slightest slip up or "cheat day" and your body will do its thing and people see weight gain.  Interesting stuff.

I just got home this evening from vacation and didnt break over the whole time! This is the best plan ever! I bought a smaller size in shirts and shorts and they fit great!!! THIS WORKS, regardless of what the scale says! Haven't weighed since I returned but have definitely lost inches and feel better

I recommend measuring your waist, etc rather than the scale fir a few days. You can do both, just not daily.

TW Lost 40 Good question.  I do both test strips and scales every morning, but understand the pants test is the best!  Although, I probably won't try that in a WallyWorld.   I don't go bananas when I fluctuate a few pounds and this morning I was .1 lbs from my goal.

For those people that still have questions about gaining weight, scales and being new, I recommend reading https://www.carbmanager.com/article/why-your-scale-doesnt-always-tell-the-whole-picture-585f7f48-8671-22d8-8724-ca1d4375f257

Karbndall  TW Here, WOW!!! That's wonderful, I'm glad to hear you are that close to your successful weight loss. That is probably why you didn't answer the 3 questions I asked you...  I personally  could not have been where I am without the scale,,, going from 265 to 225, monitoring daily did I gain or lose and only twice did I weigh the same 2 days in a row. Today is my 90th day in my program.  As far as the Ketone strips, I have been in various shades of Purple, ranging from DARK,DARK,DARK to shades of a pail purple, but always purple... I could tell by the color and thinking back what I did or didn't do exactly what the problem was, never once not knowing what the issue was, so I fixed it and moved on, thank GOD... And lastly I asked if there was a GNC near you. That's my secret and I will keep it that way. Again Congrats and good luck keeping trim, Mr. or Ms .Karbndall, keep smiling, TW

Karbndall  TW here, there is one more test I forgot,  Try laying on your back and cupping your hands around your ribs. If you can't do it, you need to keep losing. LOL : ) Have a good night.

TW Lost 40 Congrats on your loss of 40! As for the questions, on the Internet, certainly public forums, my philosophy is to not post certain information. As for GNC stores, they are around and I could find one if necessary, but I try to avoid supplements. I did resort to psyllium husk powder early on in Keto, but even that is fading out of my diet. Recipes that have this powder or that, I usually skip. If I can't eat some food with what I need in it, I probably don't need it. I find it interesting when videos or other information stress not using processed foods like refined coconut oil, but somehow MCT oil is ok for coffee. Speaking of coffee, time for a cup and to whip up some chaffles!

Karbndall  Karb n, thank you, you are very wise and at the time if I remember ,you were having a bit of a time with the scale, I didn't know you were only talking about 1 pd...

I think what you wrote was " Now it is just a slow grind down on the scale."

My experience with Keto is it's very difficult to get all the Nutrients you really need.  And I found the answer at GNC, at least for me... Good luck on keeping the weight right...

TW Lost 40 1 pd?  Maybe you're talking about the final 1 lb?  Anyway, lost 10 lbs the first 10 days and the rest was a slow grind down the scale.  After the first 10 days, I was usually stalled for 10 days, then drop 2 lbs, then another 10 day stall and another drop.  Yes, same issue with getting all the nutrients.  For me, it's usually protein that is short.  Chicken and fish, chicken and fish.  What I need is a protein bomb that doesn't push me over on carbs.  It would probably be easy to do with GNC and whey.

Arlene  TW Here, Arlene I was a caregiver for many years. For me it was the most unappreciated thing that I have ever done in my life. I spent years taking care of others and now it is time for me... I have lost 40 pds and still working on it. Did you have a comment on this subject ???
