Keto and being vegetarian

I have been vegetarian since the age of 8. In 2019 I will be 50.

Since one year I have been adopting a low carb diet. In other words I have decided to start a ketogenic lifestyle. I have told my wife that I want to eat as less carbs as possible. However, I do not want to make her life difficult and I like sharing dinner together in the evening.  She is seeing the advantages of eating low sugar and she is not very resistant anymore.

Over the last three years my state of anxiousness has risen and some days I feed very uncomfortable. I have no idea why I have come to this. Nothing much has changed and I have not had any life changing events to trigger this. I have been to the doctor to do tests including a hospital visit to do a heart and sport test. The results were promising and I am very much in shape. However my blood-work shows that my glucose level is to the upper limit, at about 105. I am almost sure that this is triggered by the cortisol due to my state nervousness. Further tests show that my HbA1c levels are safe. But since 9 months I do not touch any sugar (no cakes, no biscuits, no fructose, no sugar drinks, no fruit juices,…). I did not have a blood test since but overall I feel much better, but the anxiety is still there making my quality of life suffer. I need to work hard on that as this is literally killing me.

I go to the gym about 5 times a week, sometimes 6. Since a few months I have moved from split muscle training to circuit training with compound exercises. I have witnessed my body transform. Even my wife is astonished about the changes. Basically I do a 30 minute compound circuit training followed by two muscles I concentrate on that particular day. I perform this in supersets. So the training is brutal. But you feel so much better afterwards.

I am not a complete vegetarian. I eat fish. But never eat beef, porc or any other mammal. Dairy is also part of my diet and it helps me a lot with my Keto. Cheese and full fat Greek yoghurt help me through the day. Starting off 9 months ago I was eating low carb but also low fat: I was losing kg’s every day until I said: wait a minute this cannot go on, there will be nothing left of me going forward. Now I eat cheese, nuts, high fat fish, avocados, cottage cheese,… my weight stabilised on 67kg (I am 178 cm tall). Never been as ripped before. I have been taking protein supplements like whey isolate but I quickly went off that because I felt it was not doing much for me. I rather eat natural proteins.

As I live in Belgium I enjoy a beer once in a while. But I am going off that, it gives me heart palpitations at night time. But it is a good thing as the brew is high in carbs.

i wonder if there ar any other people here that do not eat meat.

The best of success for the new year to all.
