Newbie...Weight gain...any idea why?

I started this way of eating last week. I actually started with the egg fast diet, not knowing it's purpose and connection to keto, initially. I lost 8.5 pounds last week, but seem to have regained 2.6 pounds this week. I'm still following keto. I do about 30 minutes of cardio a day, six days a week. I'm drinking 1/2 gallon of water daily. I'm eating 18g of carbs daily (total not net), and following the recommendation on this app, in terms of fats, proteins, and total calories for the day.

Anything I should be doing differently? Or should I just assume it's water weight gain, and keep plugging along?

TIA!

jessicaboard1128 It’s water. Women have water fluctuations a lot so best to ditch the scale for a bit. If you just started cardio you could be building muscle and the water weight could be super fluctuating as the muscles are working. Keep plugging away. Your good. Don’t stress.

  • Badmojomn thank you! I'd suspected the weight change was possibly water or muscle too. Thanks for confirming.

  • There is also the whoosh effect that will cause stalls.    Apparently when you burn the fat, your fat cell initially refills itself with water rather than shrink down.    So you burned the fat, but the weight stays.

Then one day during the night you'll pee a lot, and the next morning you'll wake up with a decent size drop in weight/fat because the water flushes out of the fat cells.

And I'll save you the trouble, there is apparently nothing you can do on keto to trigger it.   Other diets call for a carb bing, but if you do that on keto then you knock yourself out of keto and you'll end up gaining other weight due to carb intake.

So you just have to wait patiently.   Apparently it can last awhile.  I'm one of those people who weigh's daily and I've been going up and down the same 3 lbs for about 10 days now.   I went down real nice, but then gained 3 lbs during the week and now I lost 1 lb of that last night, so 2 lbs over where I was 10 days ago.     I was getting irritated and researched and that's how I found out about the whoosh effect.

Just have to keep counting everything and staying under.   As long as it's all calculated correctly, the fat is burned and your body will eventually flush out the water.

  • I would cut cardio to 20 min and do more breaks in between workouts; I was going same thing I gained weight back; doing a reset on my workouts
