Net carbs

Can someone please tell me what net carbs is? And how it is calculated? Is it your net carbs that should be less than 25grams or your total carbs? My first day is today. Does it mean that depending on the fat / protein balance it cancels out some carbs?

Im also wondering if I will gain weight initially as I have been on a low calorie diet for 1 month.

let me know if you can help!

Sounds like you might want to do a little research on Keto. First net carbs are total carbs minus fiber and sugar alcohol. Most people count net carbs. You want to keep your fats high, protein moderate and carbs low. Most common taught low fat diet you burn carbs and fats are stored in your body. With keto you burn fat as fuel since you aren't getting many carbs. Most people lose a lot of weight at first (your body is releasing stored water). Then it usually slows down weight loss wise for a bit while your body gets the idea that it need to burn your fat for fuel. Hope this helps a little. Don't get discouraged, there is a learning curve for both you and your body but once you get fat adapted it gets much easier and you will start feeling great...at least I do. I've been on it 5 months and don't want to eat any other way

Thanks very much for your help! I will be keeping net carbs under 20g. Checked this am and ++ of ketones so far. I understand the beginning will be almost totally water weight and I have looked this up and I shouldn't be putting on any weight but it still hasn't sunk in that the calories are not so relevant! Thanks

linrenep you sound like you know your stuff. Maybe you can help me. I understand how you get net carbs from total carbs. When I go to my settings and choose ketogenic (vs custom or something else), carbs are 18g no matter if I choose to track net or total. This doesn’t make sense to me. help!  TIA

ztak9a0c9 I'm not sure which settings you are referring to. If you go to. If you go to settings it asks if you want net carbs, total carbs or diabetic carbs...is that what you mean? It should then show up on your macros when you enter your food. Other than that I don't know, maybe try asking in the Forum: tech support. Good luck.

linrenep  yes it shows up in my macros my point is that no matter what I choose to track either net or total, the number is always the same. If I’m tracking 20 g of carbs doesn’t that mean if I change the setting to total carbs the number would go up. It doesn’t it stays the same .

ztak9a0c9 depends on the food. If no sugar alcohol or fiber, the number would be the same. Other than that I can't say, I haven't had that issue.
