Which is more important?

Should I be focusing on Total Carbs or Net Carbs?  It kills me that a basic Baby Spinach Salad can send my total carbs up when the majority of that is Fiber.  The app seems to concentrate on Total Carbs...

No no. Not total carbs. Look at net. So total minus fiber is net amount to watch. So if you are trying to do low carb keep that net at around 20-30 grams per day and have those net carbs come from veggies like your salad (as opposed to part of a candy bar🙂). Good luck.

Also go to "settings", "carbs to track" and make sure that's set to net and not total.

  • Thank you so much!  I feel better. It was so hard to keep that Total Carbs in line. I got the app fixed also. Thank you for that tip also.

KBG Wouldn't total carbs be the way to go for Keto WOE? Because if you go over the total 20 carbs many are falling out of ketosis.

I agree with   It's been my experience and most Keto people I know that 20 net carbs should keep just about anyone in ketosis. Some people are actually able to go quite a bit higher, say even 50 or so but you'd have to just do trial and error to find your number. A starting point of 20 net is pretty safe.

Do you favor 20-30 over 5 or 12gms a day ?  That sure might be easier ! Effective ?

you mention something that sounds real important. Each one needs to find the daily carb amount that works for them. I’m aiming at 12 right now but might well increase that once I know more !!

yatesa12 if you stay at 18- 20! Net carbs you will be in ketosis. There are ketone sticks you can buy from a pharmacist and test your urin for ketones. You know you're on track or if you need to re evaluate and see where your hidden carbs are. Don't forget to eat your fatty foods. That will curb your appetite and help your body use fat for energy. It works like a charm.

Great conv here and thank you ! I’ve managed to drop 2# here in just a week (!) at 12gm but missing my vegies (!!). Tracking net carbs, thanks for that. Aiming at BMI 20 fm BMI 22-23 and that turns out not easy - so these 2# seem quite the little miracle ha ha. No luck w pretty darn strict energy in energy out in recent past so the metabolic shift  seems really cool. Have ordered keto sticks to guide this. Meanwhile, will continue to aim low but add some vegies. Stay tuned, please !THANKS for chat - seems important. !

what are you using to up fatty foods - i.e., “healthy fats” ?  I’m adding olive oil and coconut oil to things quite liberally and eating grilled salmon, mahi etc. Anything else ?  Thanks !

yatesa12 I cook with butter, bacon grease I keep from cooking Bacon, use olive and grape seed oil for salads. If you google ketone diet meals, there is an abundance of ideas out there and I'm sure you find many meals for your taste buds.  I also found that the natural , low carb meals are easier and more simple to cook. If I'm lazy or have to time, I pop a Adkins Nutritional Frozen meal in the Microwave. They are great tasting and the net carbs range from 5 to 11.

Keep at it! Sticking to your diet is a Super Power... 🏋️
