Carbs or net carbs?

Which one should I pay more attention to -carbs or net carbs?  Right now I'm averaging about 28 carbs a day but the net carbs fluctuate based on what I've been eating. Some days it's only seven net carbs, other days it's almost equal to my total carbs.

And if I'm trying to do a low carb keto (roughly 20 carbs) is that total carbs or net carbs?

I'm so confused.

There is  a general rule of thumb....if you are eating a whole food (produce, cheese, eggs, meat, etc) you can go with net.  If you are eating a processed food (one that has a label with multiple ingredients and including frankenfood) you should use total carbs.  So the simplest thing to do is to eat only whole foods and cook with only whole foods and then count net.
