Interpreting blood glucose and blood ketone readings.

I am not new to low carbohydrate eating but am new to testing my blood to see how my diet and exercise is impacting these two basic readings in my blood. I have always struggled with weight but have had success when eating well (I have done both Paleo and Keto and had great success). Over the quarantine months I was stuck working at home and ate horribly and packed on a lot of weight. Both my brother and mother are type 2 diabetics and many others on my mother’s side so that is a concern of mine.

I am currently not eating strictly a “ketogenic” diet but am keeping my carbohydrates around 50 g/day with mild overall caloric restriction. I am just eating whole foods and nothing processed. No grains, wheat, or starches with the exception of some yam and spaghetti squash.  Weight loss has been good so far (down 20 after 3 weeks, targeting a loss of 50 total lbs)

I use a Precision Neo to test my blood for glucose and ketones.  My fasting blood sugar is 5.4 most of the time (or lower) and my ketones usually fall between 0.8-1.8 mmol/l.  I have noticed that some vegetable heavy meals take 3 hours to return to fasting values for glucose.

Last night I cheated and ate a bunch of plain potato chips. About 8 hours later my morning fasting my fasting blood sugar was 6.7 mmol/l and my ketones 1.2 mmol/l. I assume my body is showing signs of pre-diabetes/insulin resistance since my blood sugar was not coming down yet I was still in ketosis to make up for an energy deficit. I went for a brisk walk for about an hour. My post values after the exercise were 4.3 mmol/l for glucose and 0.8 mmol/l for ketones. So I assume my muscles used up the excess glucose which lowered my ketosis because there was now ample insulin response to absorb the glucose.

Sorry for the LONG post. Just looking for feedback from those experienced with taking readings and whatnot might mean. I realize I can see a doctor and I will once I reach the 3 month mark to get some new benchmarks.
