Weight goal, then what?

Hi everyone, I’ve just begun the keto diet to lose 15 pounds as well as to help me stabilize an autoimmune disorder I’ve recently been diagnosed with- pemphigus vulgaris .  The symptoms of PV can be triggered by certain types of food and keto is very friendly in this regard.  Also, I hear ketones can be very healing in general.
What I’m wondering about is what to do once I’ve reached my goal weight- I’ve lost 4.5 pounds in a week so far and was in ketosis the 3rd day.  Do I raise my macros slowly and begin to add more carbs so I can enjoy more food?  How do I go about living a ketogenic lifestyle without gaining weight and bumping out of ketosis?

I’m keeping it very clean right now, but it’s also very boring and limited so I’m looking forward to jazzing things up.

I’d love to hear about any of your experiences after you’ve reached your goal weight and certainly any experiences with autoimmune disease and ketogenic lifestyle.

have a great day!

Hi, nobody replied so I'll chime in!   You had a great first week.   I'm still 6.5 lbs to goal and have the same question.  I think you're right, I think we just increase our vegetables...but I am NEVER going back to wheat and rice.  Not ever.  If it doesn't serve me it's not going in is my new mantra.  But I look forward to more veggies for sure.

Hi. I’ve lost 36 lbs. In 2 months. I’m now at 160 lbs which is best for my 5’10” height. I don’t want to lose weight anymore and want to maintain it at around that level. So I inputted my new weight on Settings and adjusted my macros so I will not gain/lose weight. Carb Manager suggested a new macros goal for me. However, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 CKD a long time ago and told to minimize my protein intake. So, I adjusted the protein to 55 g. CM then adjusted my carbs to 28 g and fats to 168 g. My questions are: 1. What can I eat to reach the fats goal of 168? 2. Is this set of macros still healthy? 3. In keto, do I have to follow the macros exactly or can I eat less as long as I follow the ratios? Help!

You can absolutely make keto diet a lifestyle.  As I read and research more, it’s becoming obvious that keto can be a successful long-term solution.  Been on keto since Oct of last year, achieved my medical goals of lower A1C, cholesterol and BP back in Dec, and have no plans to stop.  And every day I discover good recipes that are well within keto standards (also find a LOT of false advertising of things that are said to be ‘keto’ but are not).

There are some great books out there, and I’d highly recommend ‘The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living’ by Drs Jeff Volek and Stephen Phinney.  They address staying on keto for life.  They’re also on YouTube, and you can google Virtahealth to find their business (I’m NOT a customer so this is not some shameless plug) where they have a plethora of medical case studies to back up what they say - either way, they can explain things very well and give all the medical science behind the scenes.

    Hope this helps

Pat F Thanks Pat F. My FBS for the past month has been lingering about the 5.8 mmol level. Sometimes it gets to as high as 6.8 mmol. Yesterday I discovered the macros setting of Adjusted Net Carbs which if I understand correctly monitors my carbs intake that spike glucose level. So I changed my macros carbs to this Adjusted Net carbs today. Has anyone out there tried this setting? If so, please share your experience with it. Great Forum, Great App! Thanks, guys!

Supermom Hi there. Thank you for the advice. I did follow it and increased my veg intake. However, my FBS hovers around the pre-diabetic level. Anyway, I agree with your decision not to go back to rice and wheat. Keep it up!

From the Virtahealth website, I offer this medical-based thoughts to help illuminate your decision of which carbs to track:

‘Should I count net carbs or total carbs?’  By Dr. Stephen Phinney and the Virta Team

Their response is: ‘We recommend counting total carbohydrates, with the most of your food coming from real, whole foods.  With some exceptions, unprocessed non-starchy vegetables, nuts and seeds contain a relatively small (<25%) of their total carbs as soluble fiber. The use of net carbs 1) assumes there is little to no impact of both fiber and sugar alcohols on blood sugar (responses can vary among individuals so discounting them is not appropriate) and 2) often promotes the use of a lot of products like bars, low carb breads, etc. While they may be “low in net carbs” this can lead to a significant amount of added carbohydrates to your daily total.’

this may sound a bit strict and draconian, but I’ve found it to be the best way, for me, to maintain discipline.  Hope this helps.

Pat F Thanks again, Pat F. Very enlightening. I started with total carbs until yesterday when I read about the Adjusted Net Carbs. Should I instead revert back to the 20-carb range wherein I was pretty successful in controlling my blood sugar? But with this I lose a lot of weight. And, I just want to maintain my present weight. Anyway, I’ll try this ANC for a couple of weeks and see what happens. Thanks so much. You’ve been a big help.

Natsup Hi. Took your advice and reverted to total carbs. I’ve decided also to keep both my protein and fats to moderate. On 20 g of carbs, my protein is supposed to be around 113. I limit it around half. Same with fats. Is this ok? I find it hard to consume more of these 2 macros especially the fat. My fat consumption is only about 20% more than my protein.
