Athletic performance and keto diet

Hi there. I have done keto before and it works really well for me , but it affects my sport. I play hockey and during matches I burn up to 700-800 active calories. I can’t do this when I’m in keto-  I don’t have energy and feel awful. What can I do to avoid this and how long before a match/training session please? Can I add a banana to a protein rich smoothie (chia, hemp.flax, peanut butter & almond milk) or are there better alternatives? Thank you

I think it might be worthwhile to check and verify that you are really in ketosis as what you say doesn’t make much sense: according to Drs Volek and Phinney’s ‘The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance’, our bodies can store only around 2,000 kcal of Carbohydrate fuel, but over 40,000 kcal of fat fuel.  So it should be possible for someone to sustain performance through 7-800 calorie events such as you mention.  They reference a lot of studies of long distance riders, ultra marathoners, etc., who perform well for extended periods.  I’d highly recommend the book -hope it helps.
