Keto on vacation
My apologies if this is on here already. I am almost 4 months keto. I rarely eat out at home. I am going to southern california for vacation. Cooking our own meals is not an option. I realize that finding something other than a salad at some restaurants will not always be an option. What is an across the board low carb dressing that can be my go-to when get a salad at a restaurant. Also any tips and tricks is appreciated including what is your favorite and least regrettable cheat items. I will be walking a LOT and although I have barely cheated in these 4 months this is vacation after all. Thank in advance!

I did the opposite of what you’re planning to do really. I took the opportunity to order just what I wanted that was Keto, fabulous steaks, fish cooked in butter, Indian curries, a beautiful Italian aubergine and tomato dish, basically looking for food that fit my plan. I ate salad with lots of salt & pepper, olive oil, vinegar,a few fresh vegetables with butter. Breakfast was bacon, eggs, mushrooms, lunch cheese and olives. I drank still & sparkling mineral waters over ice and lots of slimline tonics which I never normally have. I lost 7lbs with eating well and moderate walking in 15 days. Any cheats? I ate a few carrots when they came unexpectedly ~ but not all of them. I had a wonderful holiday and hope that whatever you do, you will love every minute too.
10lbs to goal 🎉🎉🌸

I agree with Joanna. I would get a small bottle of apple cider vinegar and you can get individual portion bottles at the dollar store to put just enough vinegar in for your salads. I also bring my own butter with me when we go out. A lot of restaurants use vegetable oil in their salad dressings and don’t use real butter. Other than that it’s easy to do Keto for me. Enjoy your trip!

We went out for lunch one day with friends who were visiting from Arizona. Not on vacation, but....
The place went was known for their burgers. I ordered a monster bacon cheeseburger with mushrooms and carmelized onion and just said, ...”and can I have that without the bread and with any other toppings on the side?”
The response was, “absolutely! We can do that for you.”
It’s not an uncommon request and most restaurants are very willing to make adjustments for dietary concerns.
That steak dinner comes with your choice of potato? “I can’t have potato. Is it possible to get extra vegetables instead?”.... “Sure!”
Eat well. Eat what you like. Don’t be afraid to speak up. And if you’re on vacation, lighten up a little... ( a little! Hahah ) and don’t stress over every mouthful. Do the best you can and just be more strict with yourself when you get home.

Thanks everyone. Vacation just start last night. Burger no bun with salad for dinner. Snack mix on plane (one of my favorite things ever before any kind of snack mix) are half bag and didn't really care for it. My husband was going on about how awesome of a plane food snack it was. Day 2 await. I will cheat. No doubt. But it is 11 am local time and i almost have 10,000 steps.

I would suggest also grabbing some nuts, macadamia and pecans are the lower carb ones. They are a great late night snack or additions to breakfast or lunch. I’m going on a four day trip next week and plan to have bulletproof coffee, or as close as I can get to it, and splurge on proteins and fats in restaurants. With pasta or rice dishes then I will usually sub extra vegetables. My restaurant go to dressing is blue cheese, something I normally would never eat if I were not on low carb. Relax and have fun And be glad you don’t have to cook

Suze when asking for substitutes I tell waiters "if it's green, it's good, and extra butter is better". That way I don't have to get into a whole "this but not that" discussion. I carry a bottle of ACV in my car, as local restaurants seem to have all switched from red wine vinegar to sweet balsamic in their salad cruets. I order blue cheese dressing and put about a tablespoon on my salad then perk it up with ACV.
When I travel, if I'm going to have access to a fridge, I freeze HWC and lemon juice in little travel containers, and bring ACV and MCT oil in others. I get some cheese and salami snack packs and pack them all into one of those store freezer bags in my checked suitcase. I also bring Whisps and pecans in snack bags.

Suze HWC=Heavy whipping cream. I've been a big fan of vinegar all my life, I have about $300 in forbidden syrupy gourmet fruit balsamic vinegars languishing in my cupboard. So I love ACV. I don't feel any of the miraculous benefits people talk about for ACV and MCT, but I suspect that one reason I enjoyed excellent health all my life is that I've always consumed a lot of vinegar, lemon and coconut products. Switching to keto didn't change my intake of those much, just what I put them on.

Joanna Shila Meer If you are taking about exogenous ketones, I haven't heard anything good about them. I mostly hear people say you're buying "expensive pee". I second Joanna's recommendation for potassium and magnesium, they help with my muscle creations. Not a supplement, but many recommend increasing your salt intake along with your water intake to compensate for salt lost with the water.
