How about Intermittent Fasting ? Anybody doing this ?

I’m doing 16:8 IF ( internment  fasting) whenever I’m not screaming hungry in the am - right now abt 3-4x a week. Also said to be ketogenic. Anybody ?

I'm currently a flight surgeon for the Army (which basically means I do primary care for Army aviators and flight crew...not in-flight surgery :-D). I'm stationed in Tacoma, WA. So I'm not too far from you! I love The Dalles, and the whole Columbia River Valley. How did you fare with the recent fires?

I'm actually trying to improve my metabolic profile and lose weight. I've struggled with overweight/obesity most of my adult life, but always had great metabolic markers (Lipids, FG, Hgb A1c, BP, etc). However, I noticed all of those creeping up over the last year or so (after an injury left me unable to exercise for a while, and I gained a bunch of weight). I stumbled onto "The Obesity Code" at the beginning of this year, and really got serious about Keto in April. I lost 25lbs in the first two months, then was inconsistent with my WOE for a few months, but still managed to maintain my weight loss, mostly due to IF and little to no snacking. This week, I got serious again with diet, and the scale is moving downward again. 🎉

As for break meals, I'm currently doing an October Challenge with my Physician Moms' group, where we're doing a weekly carb cycling schedule. So we do 2 days strict Keto, 2 days fasting, 2 days moderate carb (30-50g), and then a "high" carb day (still keeping it under 150g). So I'll let you know how that goes. I'm currently doing the first 48-hr fast of the month...looking forward to dinner!

Would love to hear what you think of Jason Fung's work. Be warned, he can come off as kind of arrogant or flippant, but the science/reasoning is sound.

    Take care,

I usually do 16:8 or 20:4, but occasionally, I'll do an extended fast (3-5 days). I just do coffee with a bit of heavy cream, and bone broth (on extended fasts). You'd be amazed on the longer fasts how good you feel after day 2. Once you're totally running on ketones, the energy and mental clarity is fantastic.

Caitmax3  Cool, me too on the IF just about those hours. If I feel hungry though and water doesn't cure it, I go ahead and eat that day stay within my 20 carbs.

Oh pls do tell - what is your "Keto Drive" ?

    Thanks !

    Take care,

How cool, Marcy ! You are close by. Do let me know if you come through here. We just bought a house with a real nice ADU in it that  we're gonna use for family and friends, maybe rent out short term from time to time. Ha ha but you can come in as friend : )

Whatz  WOE ?  mebbee I shd know that ha ha

I love what you are saying about carb cycling, gotta read on that. I've pretty much convinced myself that this keto bit is powerful and might be used medicinally - trying this out on my own self alone - with "breaks" of eating more normally (which itself is uber organic healthy fish and vegies anyway plus some IPA fm time to time, but healthy !!). We'll see how this goes. I'm watching my weight drop slowly from mid-nl range and it truly / finally / actually IS hooray. I've had two such break meals and so far so good on maintaining prior loss at least after these. Today, after such a break yesterday, I'm projecting abt 10net gms x1day of that (good thing I like salmon!), to see if I test +keto tonight or in the morning. Next I want to see how many keto days it takes to further drop the scale reading. Of course, none of this is scientific, it's just me and it's just now ha ha.

Love that you've got a Physician Mom's group how grand that is ! And that your group is into this - now that's community indeed !

Talk soon !  I'll get on Jason Fung - we're still crazy busy but I'm on it : )

Keto Drive is a supplement that you add to water or smoothies that puts you into ketosis and keeps you there. It’s made by Zhou Nutrition and you can get it on Amazon. Orange Mango is the ONLY flavor to get, and even that is barely palatable. It tastes like Tang. (Remember Tang? If you’re old enough you will😀) It’s not cheap-about $60 per jar, but it lasts about a month.

I mix it with ice cold water and put it a S’well bottle so it stays really cold (tastes much better super cold). I start drinking it after my morning coffee and sip it  until I eat lunch around 1-2.  It really helps with “Keto Flu” and really ups my energy (with NO stimulates)

Some people use it after they’ve fallen off the wagon with a “cheat” because it puts you back into ketosis, but I drink it every morning  It’s got lots of great vitamins in it like A and C and Calcium so it’s not just for Keto levels  if you are a Prime member with Amazon, shipping is free!

also, it’s an easy and painless  way to do intermittent fasting.  Have your last meal at night and don’t eat anything until 1-2 in the afternoon.  The Keto Drive helps keep you full of energy until the PM

I am wondering about supplemental ketones and whether or not taking them in is the same as having them emit from metabolism of inherent fat. Haven't got there yet, but did order a small amount to experiment with. What do you think ? If you test ketone ++ with supplemental ingested ketones, does it feel the same as just testing ketone ++ due to your own fat metaboizing ?   Just wondering ... !

Thanks for your description. I ordered some ketones fm AMZ. Shd arrive today. Still not sure how ingesting them can be the same as “producing” them metabolically, but haven’t seen anything to say they’re harmful. Plus all those mice seem to have gotten smarter !  I’m going to start a new thread here called “Supplementing Ketos”. I’d love to hear more from you and others on just what you’ve found and  how this part of things is going for you.  I’ve dropped 7#s in just about 2 1/2 wks here max- staying at 20 net max just 2-3max days over, due to “cheat” meals.  Keto testing’s been trace to 1.5 no higher but rarely 0 since broke through.  Good luck w all this !

  • I have protein and veggies for dinner at 6 o'clock and that's it for me until 5AM  when I have bulletproof coffee with butter, MCT oil and coconut oil. At noon I have lunch of protein and veggies. If I'm still hungry at night I will have some raspberries or blueberries. It really works for me. When someone first told me about it I thought it was insane. Then I tried to do it and it really was easy. The fat is key. It keeps you from feeling hungry.

  • Vishnia  I bought the bulletproof diet book and am doing bulletproof coffee in the mornings. I get up at 5 AM and most days I probably have two of them before 10 AM and then lunch at noon and dinner at six which is protein and veggies. If I'm really hungry in the evening I might have some berries and if I'm super hungry I'll have a cup of full fat cottage cheese. My weight loss has been 5 pounds in two weeks and today I was able to fit into a pair of size 12 jeans that I couldn't even pull over my hips two weeks ago. The fat in the bulletproof coffee makes a huge difference in how hungry I feel. I don't count calories. I haven't had any bread or other carbs of that kind (pasta etc) in 2 weeks and I think that, for me, is significant. I never thought I could give up bread.

Exactly at least similar to what I am doing. Also using tea (chai for me but probably any although some say caffeine is helpful at least a cup of it) with the octane fuel (or MCT i think probably pretty much the same) plus ghee or organic butter. Amazing how there's just no hunger, drops in blood sugar etc. I'm pretty much saving up most or all my net carb allowance for dinners - 2-3 for lunch but just cuz I join my husb for both lunch and din these days. Hey,  anne  I'm also looking at the possibilities of balancing this out with breaks from time to time (hey eventually maybe once a week!). Want to find a way to "go off" keto for a meal or day, stay real healthy, not over do it and then find the best way to get right back on.

Like to hear you, talk soon !

Sweet ! I dropped 2 pounds in < a week just intermittent fasting (IF) then got into this. My husb joined in with  IF quite easily and has dropped 18 in just abt  3 weeks - maybe 4 !!! He’s not quite into this ( keto LCHF) quite yet but starting to talk the game ( “carbs” not “keto”) and I see it coming with him (!).

I do think IF is at least mildly ketogenic on its own and for many an easy add-on to LCHF and ketogenic food plans. Once ketogenic - many here say “ fat adapted” it’s not hard at all. Body’s just not hungry 😋   Ha ha but then there’s the mouth and appetite !

Good luck with this - hope to hear more fm you !

  • Joanna hi I just started and I am 70.  I appreciate your responses.  I am not in Ketosis yet and I am still tinkering with macros. I about 20 pounds overweight and walk 2 to 5 miles daily. The goal is 5. I am 5’4. I am keeping carbs  between 20 and 15. This is day four. Is there anything else I should be doing.

  • I am trying to get better at intermittent fasting.  Trying for 7pm to 11am most days of the week but seem to falter around 10-10:30am.  I think the fat on the keto diet helps keep me from getting hungry first thing in the am.  Good Luck to you.  Supposedly, and I hope, fasting gets easier the longer you do it.

Just finished my best fast. I like to start Saturday night about 8pm. I do my long run of the week and then eat a good dinner. Typically I’ll have one cup of black coffee Sunday morning then salted water through out the day. My plan was to go till 4pm  for a 20 hr fast but I felt great and continued till 6pm for 22 hr.

Broke fast with home made bone broth and then had a beef burger ( grass fed) and some spinach with MCT oil and a splash of vinegar.

Hoping to work up to a 24 then a 36 hour.

ran two miles fasted and felt very good!

eddienancy31e7 just go with your own body, I find black coffee works wonders in the morning. It will happen naturally that your eating window gets smaller and your fasting becomes longer as you Keto along.

martabennet14c337  I have just seen your post in a round up email, sometimes we just miss each other sorry.  You sound spot on, enjoy your good foods & fats and keep smiling. IF is something for later, once you are fat adapted your appetite naturally reduces as the high quality energy your body has for it’s new fuel is 5 Star you will feel the difference I promise. Plenty of fat & salts and reach out if you need help. 🌷

gostephc198585 sounds like you might be starting with keto flu: heap on The Himalayan pink rock salt, buy some potassium, magnesium & zinc supplements. Drink water when thirsty. Rest.  You can get through this and come out smiling at the other end 🙌

gostephc198585 Yup: keto flu. I had crankiness for weeks. My poor family. Nothing made me happy for quite some time. Rest when you can and take Joanna's advice. It's worth it in the end.
