Why do my ketone spike to 4.9? I am pretty new to this and been trying to log everything I do but my Ketones seem high prior to meals.

If you are not, this is a sign your body is producing ketones by utilizing fats.

Are you using urine test strips or one of the more accurate measures?

Once my ketone urine test came back positive for a few days I stopped testing.  It's my understanding that they aren't an accurate measure once you are in ketosis--it just let's you know you've switched to fat burning.

Drink too much water, the strips might say your levels are low, drink too little water and it might show high levels... your level might be related to how much you drink between meals.

chrys373 is this 4.9 on a blood meter or urine stick? At any rate, 4.9 seems high but I don’t know what brand of stick your using or blood meter. If I remember correctly in my research, 4.9 means your trending over to ketoacidosis.

I use Keto Mojo to test my blood and I am not diabetic but from time to time it spikes 4.9.. so I was curious if anyone knows why this happens..

  • chrys373 you might need to eat more green leafy vegetables. If your blood ketones are that high, you are no longer in nutritional ketosis (0.5 to 3.0) and you should eat a few more carbohydrates to lower your ketones. I'm not sure what the cutoff point is for ketoacidosis, but I would be concerned with 4.9 and possibly talk to your doctor.

chrys373 I Just googled this. Yes it’s concerning if you hit 4.9. It’s going to read as starvation ketosis. There is a slight chance your meter isn’t of quality either. I read about those meters in the past, they are not as accurate as precision x. Personally, I would get the precision x or simply see if your doc would test your blood ketones and have a reading at the same time as the meter you have and compare. You really do not want to be over 3.0 for nutritional ketosis blood readings. Could try bringing fats down, and eat a little more carbs and more calories in general.

chrys373 For weight loss optimal  will be different for everyone. If you had one reading of 4.9, it will corolate with what you didn’t or did eat. Try to keep the zone about 1.5-3. At this point I’m not sure I would fast for long periods of time. How long have you been following keto? I know when I first started at my blood read close to 3, I sure felt it. I kind of felt miserable. Fasting can come better for you maybe being on keto for a few months or more.

Badmojomn I started back in March with a few mistakes but April and May I have not made any. I have lost 25 pound so far and watching my levels to make sure I’m within range, but when I hit higher number twice I was thrown off as it wasn’t that much higher but enough that I just didn’t understand. If  fasting causes higher levels that’s makes complete sense.. it was right infront of my eyes but I had no idea it would spike like that.. thank u got your help on this..

chrys373 I guess I just wouldn’t force the fast now, pretty early into ketogenic. Try it again maybe once a week in another month or so.

Reading this thread I had one question. Why are you fasting? Usually its after a stall or not thinking that weight is dropping fast enough. You sound like you are doing well losing weight and sticking to your eating plan. There really hasn't been proven studies that show fasting is beneficial just for health so why put your body through it?

linrenep  I’m not trying to fast I just eat when my body says feed me.. my fat intake is pretty high so I suspect I go into this fasting period because my body says I’m full.. also work seems to impact when I can have my next meal so I keep snacks everywhere.  I love fat snax, nuts and bulletproof coffee.. I just need to find the neutral ground before I spike.. WIP,  as I figure out what my body wants.

chrys373 sorry. I misunderstood about the fasting. I agree with Badmojomn. You are edging to starvation mode. If it's just once I wouldn't be concerned but if regularly above 3,  I would Definetly cut some fats and eat a few more carbs. Remember the levels of fats to protein to carbs is just a guideline. Everybody is different and your body is Definetly telling you to eat more carbs. If in starvation mode you won't lose much weight if that's your goal. Good luck. And I've read reviews on the Keto Mojo and they are good so I don't think it's that.

It is extremely dangerous for you people to run your mouth with misinformation like this.

If you’re pretty strict keto, 4.9 is indicative that you’re eating too much “extra” fat and your body isn’t getting the chance to burn body fat instead of dietary fat. Just cut back for 3-7 days.

4.9 is not at risk for ketoacidosis. Not even close. Blood sugar over 200-240 in a type 2 would prompt a test of ketones and if they showed over12-15, they would diagnose ketoacidosis. KETO AND KETOACIDOSIS ARE COMPLETELY UNRELATED. STOP IT.

Lastly, fasting is extremely beneficial to your health and there is an abundance of science to support this. Intermittent fasting is the way to maximize keto weight loss and body comp impact. Doing a 60 hour water fast once a month gives massive benefits via autophagy(cellular rejuvenation).
