Hardly losing any weight!

Hi, where's all that weight loss people talk about? I've been on keto (checked with strips) for 6 days, feel terrible from the keto flu, and have lost less than a pound. My calorie intake is around 1600 and I do 1 hour of Pilates twice a week. I'm following the calculator and I don't get the exact numbers but pretty close (e.g. 100 or 115 / 109 grams of protein or 115/122 of fat). I changed my plan to ketosis to cut down the carbs even more (was in 35 net and dropped to 25 because I never really reached 35 anyway). Help! What am I doing wrong? I'm getting discouraged 馃槩

  • I honestly think the goals for this app are off. I try to reach 20 net carbs 94 protein and 130 fat. Most common problems I see a lot of people say is to much protein and to much dairy! Good luck!

Yeah, I've read many different goals and I'm not sure which one applies best to me with a difference of 20 g more or less of proteins and fats

It does seem odd you haven't dropped yet. You said 6 days Keto but have you been low carb for longer than that? (It takes a while for Keto to start.) Usually the weight lost in the first couple weeks is water/bloating weight. Do you feel less bloated?  What were you eating before?  A lot of carbs or very minimal? I'm curious how much of a change this is for your system, very minimal or pretty drastic? Your protein amount - is it easy for you to hit that or are you stuffing yourself?  Make sure you aren't stuffing yourself! Eat when your hungry, don't eat when not. This means skipping breakfast is fine - in fact good for you if listening to your body. Also, do you have a lot to lose or just a little? If it's only a little it'll be slow. Those last pounds are always slow. On the protein and fat amounts, I have a chart or a scale that shows 120 grams in the center and then arrows to the right or left each showing + or - 50 grams. The center 120g amount is for the average male. If you are larger or smaller framed and also more or less active you adjust your grams up or down. The overall range then is 70 grams to 170 grams. Know about where you are in relation to that center point. Myself for example, female and should be smaller framed and currently pretty sedentary so I'm happy if I get between 70 grams and about 100 grams each day. It will fluctuate depending on how I feel and the type of food/meat we have on hand. Wow. Sorry so long but I hope that helps. Try not to get too hung up on exact numbers. Listen to your body. When hungry target healthy protein and fat and limit the carbs to 20 grams or so per day.  Best wishes.

KBG well I actually started 2 months ago via a dietician!! I must've been eating about 50 g of carbs with his diet so I only lost like 7 lbs in those 2 months. I started using the app last Monday but was on keto (just a trace on ketostix). I started following the app and got a nasty keto flu, just coming out of it!  I was keeping net carbs under 35 g because he app suggested so but I've switched to less than 25 for the past 3 days. I'm not overeating because I get full. A normal menu is 2 scrambles eggs with spinach and a slice of mozzarella cheese cooked with a tbsp of butter, coffee with almond milk and a tbsp of peanut butter. For lunch I have chicken breast, beef, tuna, fish, etc. with a salad made with lettuce, spinach, kale, red peppers and avocado, Caesar dressing or oil and vinegar. For dinner usually a large salad (lettuce, spinach, peppers, cucumber, avocado and bacon, chicken or tuna with olive oil and vinegar. I drink like 8-10 glasses of water a day. What am I doing wrong? Also I do Pilates twice a week. I've kept my ketosis moderate according to ketostix. So in 7 days I've lost less that 2 lbs. I thought it would be more. I'm keeping the recommended grams of carbs, protein and fat, my calories are no more than 1700, so I must be broken or something 馃槀

What do you weigh and what should you weigh?  Or in other words do you have a lot or a little to lose?

Your start with the nutritionist having you go lower carb - it sounds like that's when you lost your initial weight. It's like your big initial drop got spread over 2 months because it wasn't completely low carb just lower carb. And now you're more at a regular pace of losing.  2 lbs a week is really pretty good. Imagine where you'll be in a few months. For me once I got within 10 lbs or so of my ideal weight I was losing maybe a pound a month. So VERY slow. But at that point it doesn't matter. 10 extra pounds is nothing compared to 40 or 50.

Also about the Keto sticks鈥ou can be producing ketones and thus wasting them out before your body actually learns to use them and becomes fat adapted.  I'm actually currently in about this phase. I'm producing them but I can tell I'm not fat adapted. (Done this before.) Once you're fat adapted you really won't feel hungry.  I got to where I ate only one or two meals a day.

Stick with it. Eat healthy proteins and fats and limit the carbs. 馃憤馃徏

Sorry, hit reply button too soon. I'm  41, 165 lbs, 5.5 tall. I'm trying to lose the last 15 lbs of 35 lbs from baby weight. I guess it's slower for me. I have to say that I've never felt better, the keto flu began just this week that I lowered the carb intake  to 35 and then 25 g, but almost recovered. I didn't know that about  being fat adapted.  I'm not really hungry and sometimes I have to force myself to eat lunch because I get full after a couple of bites. I don't wanna eat less than 1400 calories either.

alegarza7 Ya you don't have a whole lot to lose so it's probably going to be slower. It comes off faster the more a person has to lose. Our stats are very similar. I'm 40, 5'-6, and unfortunately currently 185. I have gotten down to 155 on low carb/Keto and felt great and my weight was pretty stable there so I know this works. You just can't go back to carbs. 馃槕 I'd say don't force a meal. The fat and protein is really satiating.  I've gotten to where I don't worry about traditional mealtimes anymore. I eat when I'm hungry. This usually ends up being just lunch and dinner. My calories fluctuate from day to day and I figure that's just what I needed those days. I just quick looked at a few days and I can fluctuate between 900-1600. I haven't done any research into calorie amounts on this. I've just focused on protein and fat till I'm full and limited carbs and it's worked for me. My doctor is also a proponent of more protein so I try to target protein which is good for me cause I think I might not get enough otherwise. Looks like my average protein is 70-90 g with occasional lower or higher days. Well good luck!

Metabolism needs to readjust. Depends on a lot of factors. Your doing the right thing. Depending on your weight loss goals.  Took me two months to take off a few pounds. Hang in there. Men take it off faster than woman also.

This way of life isn't instant weight loss.  I'm in month 3-4. On the third month I started seeing a difference in my jeans. Also. If your still flu- try more salt more water and some coconut oils or more oils. Also. I started a slu of multiple supplements. I got off the coconut oils and started these supplements and feel much better. Starting this lifestyle takes pantients and tweaking. Check out healthfulpersuit. She tells a lot about this lifestyle.

alegarza7 I'm not an expert in this by any means but a few strawberries in the evening then back on bacon and eggs next morning with extra butter helped me through flu. Listen to pod casts by healful persuite. "No sugar coating". I have learned ALOT from her.

badmojomn I am taking almost all of the supplements she is and I tell you- I feel a lot better. Keto adaptation can take a few weeks for some people but it's very important to educate yourself why and when your feeling this way. You could be missing out on something like salt intake - minerals. Etc. my keto flu came and went. Now after 3 month mark I don't have flu.

Yes, definitely with the flu add some salt. I like to drink broth. I don't care for bone broth. (I remember badmojomn  doesn't like it either.)  Instead I just make beef bouillon. I like the Better Than Bouillon brand. Make it just like a tea or coffee  one cup at a time and drink that instead of coffee. And add salt to your foods.  It helps me with the headaches.

  • I've heard that it's best to avoid super high protein foods such as chicken and tuna since they are pretty much pure protein (they're really lean). Go for fattier protein sources such as fatty beef, bacon, fatty fish, etc. And then still add oils to your meals as well. Avocados are great too.

But yeah, protein can actually cause an insulin response (and it can cause bigger responses in some people-you might be one of them) so just really try not to go above 20% of your calories from protein. You could even try to play around with that number and aim for like 15% if you want to see if that works more for you.

badmojomn Hi! Well, still on keto and very happy, but not losing too quickly. I had to lower my net carbs to 20, protein at 93 g and fat at 118 g or so. I reduced my calorie intake to 1500 and I'm exercising 4 times a week. You'd think that I'd lose a lot with that but not, a bit quicker but not a lot. I've only lost 4 lbs in the last 4 weeks and well... hanging in there, at least I'm losing, at snail pace, but losing. Still 10 lbs to go, I could lose 15 but I don't want to look older. After 40 you need a bit of fat in your face to look your age lol! How are you doing?

alegarza7 I'm doing good. I still have to tweak my foods as I am experiencing some inflammation in the morning. Im not gaining, so that's good. I figured I had this weight for a long time, it will take awhile to get it off. Took about 2.5 months to start seeing something happening in my jeans. Exercise is a whole different measurement with this lifestyle of eating. Depending what you do, you may need more carbs? I watched a few body building guys on keto on YouTube. They have some good pointers for those who excersise. I think the less we have to take off, the longer it will take. If your bmi is really high, it would come off fast at first. Do you feel fat adapted yet? No flu symptoms? If not you should be there soon. I actually was good after the first few weeks or more then felt flu. The multiple supplements helped a great deal. I feel normal again. I try to do carb ups once/ twice week in evening. Finding that if I let myself - eating a whole carton of strawberries. Lol

alegarza7 I forgot when you started keto? You should see some results in smaller jeans or your current jeans in about 2-3 months. If your toning muscle and exercising, that muscle is building at the same time- so you may see an increase of weight on the scale for awhile. Try lighter exercise - and maybe a little less if nothing starts to fit looser in 3/5 weeks. I started an eliptical trainer while keto. I grew out of my current jeans. 馃槴 Lots of tweaking needs to be done with macros and vitamins with exercise, especially cardio. I have seen people cut down because of the science it involves.
