Why not in ketosis?

I’ve been on Keto diet for 6 weeks and this morning first time tested with strips. Said only in “slight” ketosis. When does it kick in? The night before a I had a lot of digestive issues & w/o getting graphic lost a lot of water. Does that have anything to do with it?

Rosa, if you are showing even trace ketones, you are in ketosis, unless you do blood testing, the sticks can be off depending on time of day, and how much liquids you have drank

Mary I have read that if your body is properly using ketones for fat burn then you should see a low trace when using the test strips.

Lisammmk Mary this is true. Ketogenic <over 1 year. I never get my sticks or blood meter up like I used to. Pure fat burning machine now. My ketones are being used.

  • I have tested as well. I started 3 weeks ago. I have lost 7lbs. I was wondering if there is an optimum time to check with the urine strips and times not to. Thanks

My understanding with the urine strips eventually the ketones will not show up on them because your body has adapted. You can also have a false positive early on due to high levels of fat being eaten. Blood is the only long term viable way to test.

I read an expert say that on the urine strips he wants to see no trace.

At 4-6 weeks your should be seeing some ketones but if you are truly fat adapted, and haven't cheated, the strips will eventually not be reliable.

Badmojomn that's very cool. So do you have to test still or don't bother anymore?

Same happening  to me...from what lve read it's a good thi ng....the body is burning fat so ketone strips won't be effective.  So lm gonna stop testing.

I was doing great with moderate to large ketone output then had surgery which with anesthesia issues forced me into a three day fast. I tested for the first time since being discharged from the hospital and find only a slight trace (5.0) present. I was afraid when they said the fluids they were administering were to rehydrate and regulate my blood sugar, that they were kicking me out of Ketosis but after reading the above info am relieved that what I am seeing could actually  be a good thing. Thanks for sharing
