Fitbit tracker - deducting WAY too many calories/carbs etc.

I want to have my fitbit connected with my carb manager but it is completely off.  I took a 21 minute walk with my dog today and it deducted 767 calories and 10g carbs?  yesterday I think it took about 800 calories off... there is no way I burned that many calories.  Anyone else have this problem?  I want it to be accurate.  Anybody ????

I do, too. I had to turn off accounting for exercise because what's carb manager calls exercise is way too many calories.

Well, at least I'm not the only one - any way to get them to fix it?  I have turned mine off but then, yesterday evening suddenly all my numbers changed again - it popped back on.  I am having a hard enough time losing weight, that just encourages over eating.  I would love the real numbers to be there there, or even just exercise - doesn't really need to subtract.  At least I know it is a thing ... not carbmanager messing with me!  HA!

Fitbit, Online Calculators and Cardio Machines

All of these devices over estimate the number of calories that you burn.

That is one of the reason that many individuals often tout that they burn 1000 calories in a workout, yet never lose any weight.

Your Fitbit Is Largely Inaccurate When Counting Calories  https://www.thespec.com/life/health-wellness/2017/05/25/your-fitbit-is-largely-inaccurate-when-counting-calories-stanford-researchers-say.html

A team of Stanford researchers, however, recently called foul after testing these trackers. The scientists said in a paper published Wednesday in the Journal of Personalized Medicine that though the devices purport to help users track their calories - daily energy expenditure -the number is often markedly incorrect.

Don't Get Burned by Calorie Counters    https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Weekend/exercise-calorie-counters-work/story?id=9966500

On average, the machines overestimated by 19 percent and the watches overestimated by 28 percent.

    Here's the breakdown:

Treadmill: Overestimated calories burnt by 13 percent.

Stationary Bike: Overestimated calories burnt by 7 percent.

Stair Climber: Overestimated calories burnt by 12 percent.

Elliptical: overestimated calories burnt by 42 percent.

    Three Day Recall Diet

A more practical method determining if you are in a calorie deficit, surplus, or maintenance is...

    1) Count your calories for three days.

    2) Divide that amount by the three days.  That provide you with your Average Daily Caloric Intake.

    Common Sense

    1) Deficit: If you are losing weight, you are expending more calories than you are taking in.

    2) Surplus: If you are gaining weight, you are taking in more calories that you burn.

    3) Maintenance:  No weight change means your calories and energy expenditure are balanced.

    Exercise and Calorie Expenditure

Exercise does little to burn calories.

As you know, diet is the key.

Exercise is effective at preserving muscle mass during weight loss; use it or lose it.

Secondly, one of the issues that many overweight individual have is Insulin Resistance; the body storing more calories as fat.

Exercise increases Insulin Sensitivity, which assist with weight/body fat loss.

Penmeister  I asked carbmanager support about it and was told that it is pulling in actual calories burned beyond sedentary. So, if I have it right - I should set my carbmanager profile to Sedentary (and the calories/macros to match) and then allow for getting calories back for exercise. I played with it a bit today, and I think I buy it. I'll have to wait a few more days to see if it still seems reasonable. I think what's basically going on is that fitbit doesn't know what activity level you set in carbmanager so what gets reported is just everything above what is necessary to keep breathing in a day.

  • shawna v Thanks for the info, I wonder if that worked out for you?  Even if I list sedentary (which I am, I work on my computer all day) the totals it is tracking is completely wrong - you just can't burn that many calories while walking even if it is fairly strenuous.  Since I am trying to lose weight will probably just remove the connection so I don't overdo my carbs and calories, but would like everything tracked accurately.  I am not doing very well with this and not only stopped losing but put a couple more pounds on -  I hate tracking but if I have to do it I'd like it to be correct.  Let me know if you think that worked by resetting if you get a minute and thanks.

It's a lot closer. I just set my carbmanager goal a lot lower than i actually plan to eat and closer to what a full day of sleeping (per fitbit) would burn, that way when it gives me 500 calories of fitbit activity, i know it's just accounting for regular sedentary activity. (My sleeping calorie burn, per fitbit is about 1382 calories per day but my regular day to day office life is about 1800). The math isn't perfect, but it's a lot closer. I prefer the way that myfitnesspal displays calorie deltas, personally, but maybe that's just because that's what I used first and got used to it.
