Hi, I’m Jen!

I used to do keto to help with narcolepsy symptoms. It seemed to help some, but I fell off the wagon with it last fall. I’m easing back in and am going to do moderate low carb now. I feel that for me personally it will be a little bit easier to handle with my illnesses and lifestyle, but I also discovered throughout doing keto that I don’t tolerate being that low carb - it eases some of the narcolepsy symptoms but created some other issues (I take a medication that doesn’t work properly if carb intake is extremely low.) I’d love to make some friends through this so we can support each other on our respective journeys!

hey, I guess I'm not alone than.  My name is Paul and I've been epileptic sense I was three.  Years ago my nuero asked if I had ever tried the ketogenic diet. I asked about it and tried going sugar free for a few days. I didnt really know enough about the diet to do it right, so I didnt get the results I was hoping for.  my seizures are intractable and happened every night of my life. I'm 53. as of february 18th we estimated roughly 36,000 seizures. after filling my freezer full of meats for valentines day and stopping all sugars, grains, fruits and starches. four days later they stopped. . .

I went to a epilepsy support group in March to talk about what was happening with a group of about 17 other epileptics. I didnt get the response I was hoping for however. All epilepsy is different in most cases. I found that an epileptic has to want remission bad enough in order to do the diet. If he/she is only having an occasional seizure now and than the sacrifices of ice cream and soda isnt worth it to them.

I have all most no respect for the community of neurological professionals. If my doctors would have worked with me on my diet instead of stuffing me full of pills that didnt work and brought on unexplainable horrifying side effects for years of my life my life would have been a lot less pain filled.

I can blame myself to some extent but doctors have known the science seance the 1920's

my next hurdle is backing down off of lorazepam. Ive been taking it for 19 years now. when I start weening off of it I expect withdraws.  My plan is to amp up my keytones to over (?) I need support with this number. Than once I'm off the lorazepam to back down the keytones to a point I can eat healthy carbs again. ..........the problem is making the changes downward in both the benzo and keytones.  I fear the backing off will induce seizures.

I fear taking exogenous keytones. mct oil. If I stopped that could induce seizures as well.  I can;t fast. abrupt changes in keytones has induced seizures. I've found a decent natural pathic  internal med doctor to guide me through this,

I take 400mg of Vimpat daily . along with 400mg of lamotrigine daily.... whether this ever changes time will only tell.  ........

Jen, how badly do you need recovery? Have you ever considered changing that med that prevents you from full recovery? Intermittent fasting has been said to restart growth hormone in the brain. Full recovery from epilepsy narcolepsy may be possible. Not taking meds and being dependent on those meds seems like the goal that we (those with chronic conditions) is the goal we should be striving for. It has been achieved in the past with youth. growth hormones in play> keytones hold the key..........Dom d'Agustino has done some awesome study  in the chronic therapies field.  Keep an eye on this guy and hope for full recovery. thanks for posting your story.

  • Paul Metcalf Your story is heart wrenching and courageous.  I believe sugar is the root of all evil.  I don't have any medical issues but I know even 57 days in the last few days have been rough with cravings.  I am not sure if fasting is necessary and I can not seem to get past 21 hours but if it works for some great if not no pressure.

I am glad you found a Dr. you trust because coming off sugar and meds will take professional assistance.

    Good Luck and Welcome
