Want to try keto but am a picky eater

Hey everyone. My name is Amanda. I’m a 25 with about 100 lbs to lose. I will be (kinda) starting keto tomorrow (doing the best I can with what I already have) but will actually be starting for real on Friday when I’m able to get to the grocery store and stock the fridge.  My problem is that I really don’t like some of the key elements of the diet. Ex. Red meat or any meat with noticeable chunks of fat. I mostly only eat ground turkey right now. I’m also not a big butter or salt fan. The diet itself intrigues me as cheese is what I have the hardest time giving up and I’m excited that I’ll be able to keep it in my diet. Does anyone’s else have a similar situation or have and suggestions on ways that I can incorporate these things without being completely grossed out? I am not a vegetarian but I was for about 4 years back in high school. I just have always been genuinely so grossed out by meat, butter, and salt. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

  • I think you should be able to manage. I personally eat alot of chicken breast. Honestly i feel alot of people take the fat thing to the extreme. The key is to eat enough fat to feel satisfied and not overeat on the carbs or even the protien, even though everyones body digests the protiens a little differently. If you are very active and have a decent amount of muscle some extra protien probably wont be a problem.  We want our body to be buring through our own fat stores. Olive oil and avacados are fantastic sources of healthy fats. You dont have to sit down and eat a stick of butter or a pack of bacon to meet your macros. You like veggies? You can eat alot of the low carb veggies without going over. Spinach, broccoli, cauliflower. Saute with some bacon or olive oil top with some cheese and pair it with your meat. YOU DO need to watch how you feel when it comes to salt though. Keto can cause alot of water loss especially at first, easily leading to electrolyte imbalance. If you drink too much water because you will feel thirsty and dont replenish the salt you will feel sluggish. Same the other way around too! Just something to keep in mind. If you are peeing alot and chugging water and starting to just feel blah, try eating something salty. Even chicken broth, provides fluids and salts. BTW cheese has a good amount of salt!

My husband is a picky eater not big on meat or fatty meat. He joined me on this lifestyle in May. He eats higher carbs than me because he needs Keto baked goods to fill in the gaps. He is also a big cheese eater.

Do what feels right for your body. Eat the meats you enjoy. Your body can burn its own fat. Just be sure to pair veggies, berries or Keto baked goods with protein if you are not adding extra fat to blunt the insulin response.

Cheese can be your added fat. Be sure to count the carbs.

My husband lives on Keto tortillas, Keto cheese biscuits, Fat Head pizza, Keto fried chicken strips & shrimp, Keto hush puppies, Keto fried onion rings, crispy Keto tacos, Keto sandwich buns, Keto Taquitos all with minimal meat, lots of cheese and few veggies. He has lost 30lbs.

I succeed on coffee, high fat meat & veggies. All our bodies and tasted are different. You will find what works for you.

jennifer bailry How about non-lettuce salads?  Spinach  salad, broccoli salad, cole slaw, etc.  Look up salads on AllRecipes and exclude lettuce as an ingredient.

jennifer bailry Are there any veggies that you do like? As with any diet, you have to make a conscious choice to commit to a lifestyle change and it's not always easy to do. I like to think that I am stronger than cravings and I feel proud when I can overcome old habits. My husband isn't keto but low carb and has had success with it. For me, keto keeps me more accountable to the lifestyle change and that's why I like it.

You really don't need to eat that many veggies because believe it or not, carbs go by fast on keto. You could also try a keto friendly smoothie or shake and add kale. It won't change the taste but you'll get that leafy green in. I love cucumbers in vinegar for a savory crisp snack. Olives are a great fat. I recently tried zucchini noodles and loved them with keto alfredo sauce chicken and broccoli. We make broccoli, asparagus, sauteed peppers, or fresh green beans often. While I can't do just cooked spinach I actually do like it cooked in with scrambled eggs and some cheese!

If you're not big on butter then use olive oil when cooking. I don't do red meat all the time, I usually do a balance of steak (I don't eat the fat though, can't stomach the texture), chicken, ground beef, and pork, chicken probably being more commonly what I cook. I do love fish and need to start incorporating that and shrimp more. I eat breakfast for dinner usually once a week because I do love eggs and bacon. You can even make keto friendly pancakes topped with some fresh berries.

  • My name is Amanda, Im 47yo and need to lose 10lbs. I know that dont sound like much but it is for me. I am high risk for diabetes due to family history and  my 37in circumference waist. I looked at the Keto menu and immediately frowned. There was nothing that looked pleasing. UNFORTUNATELY, I am a carb eater but I so much want to learn how to change that. I like veggies... green beans, carrots, peas, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cucumbers, lettuce... that is about it.  I only like fish if it comes in a box from the freezer aisle. I love oysters, crab, and shrimp. I can eat chicken, turkey, and beef. I rarely eat pork but this could be changed.  I like cashews but avoid nasty almonds. I only drink water except an occasional caffeine free diet coke. On the weekends I will consume some alcohol (cinnamon schnapps). should I seek out maybe protein drinks to cover my breakfast and lunch, if so, any suggestions on which one? any suggestions would be appreciated!  Thank you

  • You will definitely need to find things you enjoy eating on keto and you will. I love a spring mix salad with chicken avocado and strawberries and ranch. Sometimes i use a chicken salad.  I like cream cheese so i make cheesecake fat bombs. I love coffee so i add grass fed butter.  Its hard getting started to find things you LIKE but after time you will find you favorites and even can use them as a comfort. Try cauliflower and cheese (keto mac and cheese) also know that there is a keto recipe for EVERYTHING. Keto white chicken chilli i love. I just found a recipe for keto nutter butters. Also I love matt and mega from keto connect they have some great videos on everything keto you can think of.

  • I am also a picky eater. I did pretty well on keto for the past 3 months but now suddenly I'm burned out on bacon & eggs (not an egg fan to begin with but I forced myself anyway), steaks, chicken, pork chops, taco salads without the chips and broccoli. I've tried searching online for other foods on the keto list but don't like most of them such as avacado's, blueberries, blackberries, seafood of any kind, heavy cream keto shakes. Some things on the list I like, but you can't make a whole meal out of almonds or olives.  I am halfway to my goal (lost 20 of the 40 lb goal) and am starting to slip because I am just so sick of eating the same things over and over.  Can anybody suggest other high fat, low carb foods that don't show up on the Google searches?

  • I'm also quite a picky eater, but I managed to stick to the keto diet for quite a long period of time. The good news was, cheese is totally fine to eat on the keto diet. I can east almost any food if it is combined with cheese. In order to make my cooking faster, I even bought a rotisserie oven (the third one from this list:  https://www.justinscafe.com/best-rotisserie-oven/). It is a perfect choice if you wat to bake home-made pizza or extremely delicious meat.
