What am I doing wrong?

I’m ten days into the Keto diet and I haven’t lost a ounce. According to this app my percentages are correct each day, and I have kept my carbs under 20 everyday except yesterday where I had 22. I am consuming around 1600-1800 calories which feels like a lot to me. But I am only eating two meals a day and a snack plus 3-4 cups of coffee with a small amount of heavy cream. I am constantly hungry. I have a two month old that wakes me up 3-4 times a night and I have found this is the worst hungry time for me. I feel like my stomach is trying to eat me. But I resist the urge and only eat between 10am and 8pm. (I know that’s a little more than the 8 hour window. I’m struggling so hard with this, idk if I could handle a smaller time frame) I think about food constantly. And not necessarily carbs or sweets. Just food. Anything to curb my hunger. For example: for breakfast yesterday I ate two pieces of bacon, two sausage patties, two eggs with cheese and spinach, three cheese crisps, a slice of cheddar, some grape tomatoes, and some pecans plus lots of butter to cook the eggs and cheese crisps. I felt plenty full. An hour later I was hungry, and two hours later I felt completely empty and desperate to eat. I just checked my ketosis level using test strips and I am not in ketosis. My husband, on the other hand, starts the Keto diet (he’s off and on with it) and goes into ketosis within three days and has rapid weight loss within a few days of that. I’m feeling so discouraged. Any advise? What am I doing wrong? I’m about ready to throw in the towel. In in past I have had lots more success and less misery simply cutting calories, or cutting out meat for a few weeks

I see you having lots of coffee but are you drinking water? Sometimes we think we are hungry but water is what our body needs.  Also, adding MCT oil  and making  bullet proof coffee helps to keep us satisfied more. I know some people have this instead of breakfast but I still like my breakfast. If you make bulletproof coffee you use a blender and it makes a frothy coffee and the fats will mix in better. Don't throw in the towel! You may be losing inches even if the scales don't show it. You just had a baby and your body is going through a lot of changes! Are you nursing? This could make a difference. I'm sure others might have more suggestions but hope this helps.

Not sleeping through the night will cause cravings, which is unavoidable with a newborn.  And if you're nursing, you might need to eat more.  It's early days (in terms of being a new mom), and your body is still adjusting.  If you're that hungry all the time, add some more healthy fat or protein.

  • You should eat when you are hungry and forget this window period. When we first start it is hard to focus and takes 2-6 weeks before you start feeling satisfied. I had a cheesecake in the refrigerator because prior to Keto I ate breakfast, then snacked (ate) until 7 PM. This is not an exaggeration.  When I started Keto if someone had told me I could only eat during a window I would have failed.  Fasting is not something you should do until you can eat breakfast (or whatever meal) and not eat again for however many hours you are comfortable with.   Please don't put pressure on your self during this struggling time.  Stress will also raise your cortisol and make it darn near impossible (IMHO) to lose weight.  Read as many of these forums posts you have time for and learn from regular folks and see you are not alone.  ❤️

  • @heather0647  I have found that the single most important thing to stave off the hunger pangs during this diet is to consume enough of the right fats.  The bullet proof coffee has really helped me a lot.  I see that you are consuming several cups of coffee a day which I do as well.  I don't do bullet proof coffee every cup, but rather on my first cup of the day.  I work a 12hr MIDS shift from 6pm to 6am and caffeine is essential to my success at work.  If you feel like you are getting hungry make another cup of bullet proof coffee.  You will be surprised how well it works.  I also have found that if I reach my minimum of 64oz of water a day it helps out a lot.  I have not had a sweetened liquid calorie since April 15th and so everything I think of reaching for a Dr. Pepper or Sweet Tea I drink water or unsweetened tea (hot or cold).  I hope this helps some.  Good luck!

JohanneG What is this sleeping through the night thing of which you speak? I've heard rumors of it but I believe it to be a myth.  I am not a good sleeper. I've always been jealous of people who are.

Remember that coffee is a diuretic, it counts as negative water.  You need to drink enough extra water to compensate for the coffee. Intermittent fasting is not a necessary component of Keto. It's an optional tool that some people find useful, others do not. If it doesn't fit your lifestyle or meet your daily needs, drop it. Eat three meals a day, just make sure they fit in your macros.  It might be helpful to you to save enough calories to have a cup of herbal tea such as chamomile with a tablespoon of heavy cream in it when you get up with the baby. Warm milk is supposed to help you get back to sleep, as do certain herbal teas, plus the fat in the cream will help address those mid night hunger pangs.

  • Tria Yes. I am drinking lots of water. Coffee and water is all I’m drinking right now.

Thank you for you’re response  and suggestions. I did just start the MCT oil in my coffee today. I love bulletproof coffee but I usually don’t drink it because I thought it was more of a meal replacement thing, and I like my solid foods too much.

Today I went way over on my carbs, fats, and calories. I was so hungry all day and just gave in and made a unsweetened almond milk, cream, and peanut butter shake. It wasn’t as good as a milkshake, but definitely felt like a treat. Unfortunately it sent me up to 27 carbs.

  • Moondrake 😂 I have always been a “get up at least once and have a snack “ sort of person. So being up half the night isn’t that bad for me except it makes me horribly hungry.

But yes, I know what you mean. My mom loves to joke that her “baby” still doesn’t sleep thru the night.

Heather0647 I get up once or twice a night to pee and let my girl dog out to pee (she must be reading over my shoulder as she just came and asked to go out).  My boy dog has a boy bladder and never goes out at night.  I never eat anything when I get up, though.  But I wake up probably a dozen times a night and sometimes have difficulty going back to sleep.   It's a lifelong problem I got from my mom.

Heather I am a poor sleeper also. I have hard time falling sleep and then wake up a lot and toss and turn. One thing that has helped me more lately is taking a couple Magnesium pills a couple hours before going to bed. Helps with leg cramps and I seem to be  getting a better sleep.  I still wake up but now I seem to be able to go back to sleep again instead of getting up and wondering around the house at 3 in the morning. I see a lot of people on Keto that use it also. You might want to try it as our body needs it, it seems.

You have a couple things going on here. Your body is still adjusting to childbirth, though weaning off now. If you are breastfeeding you need to carefully evaluate yours and your baby’s nutritional needs. Having a baby waking you up is far different than being a poor sleeper. Breastfeeding or not, you may want to cut down on the coffee and add some dairy to help you feel satiated. You can cut back in a few weeks once you’re in the swing of it. You may want to continue with the same diet, but spread it out more. Give yourself a little more time before you even consider intermittent fasting beyond overnight. If you are breastfeeding you maybe better talking to your doctor about how to approach keto. It may also just not be your time. You may fair better on a diabetic type low carb diet for the time being than a full out keto.  Give yourself a break. It’s hard enough being a new mom much making a diet lifestyle change at the same time.

Heather0647 Pam 27 carbs may not be the macro that is set in this app, but it is not a disaster. Some people happily bump along with 50  carbs a day. You have just had a baby! Your body has got a lot to do at the moment. This is one of the toughest times of your life. These celebrities who regain their figures in five minutes have nannies who take the strain. If you are feeding the baby you definitely need to be careful. Give your body time to adjust to having given birth and to nourishing a baby. You are doing a fantastic job. Cherish yourself. I'd go on you tube and look for advice about nursing mothers on Keto. And above al,, be happy and enjoy your baby, you lucky mum. This time will not come again. Sorry if I sound like a bossy granny. That's because I am! With love.
