Is Keto Diet Bad For Kidneys?

Keto is a high protein diet therefore consuming a high amount of protein will result in more stress on both the kidneys. In such a condition, the kidney function may be damaged.

Any suggestion?

  • Keto is not a high protein diet.  Moderate protein at 20-30% of calories.

  • I find myself eating LESS protein than before doing Keto. Also, my kidney function, liver etc all been testing on my last blood work and everything is #1. Im off my BP meds, Sleep apnea is better and overall health 100x better.

  • Yeah, Keto isn't high protein, it's high fat... so you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If you have health concerns or pre-existing conditions maybe a good idea to get with your personal physician and feel out your options.

You’re probably confusing Keto (high fat) with Atkins (high protein).

Maybe learn more about what keto is and isn’t, instead of just going by what you heard somewhere.

Maggie K I think he is trying to ask so be nice, did we all come to learn and teach what we have learned. I'm new to keto so I have things to learn and if I get the business I will leave to find facts without attitude. so maybe you can tell us please.

Go to YouTube and search for "Thomas DeLauer ketogenic diet vs. kidneys."

You'll find that his videos are very informative (based on scientific research) regarding how the ketogenic diet affects the body.

actually if you do research here are the types of ketogenic diets

    Different Types of Ketogenic Diets

There are several versions of the ketogenic diet, including:

    • Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): This is a very low-carb, moderate-protein and high-fat diet. It typically contains 75% fat, 20% protein and only 5% carbs (1Trusted Source).
    • Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher-carb refeeds, such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high-carb days.
    • Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts.
    • High-protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. The ratio is often 60% fat, 35% protein and 5% carbs.
