Does LCHF cause kidney stones?

I have been on this diet for a few months now and doing well with one little mishap. But now I have two kidney stones (one was passed this morning). It was extremely painful and if it is from the diet I'll have to do something else... Please let me know if anyone else has heard of this happening?

I would google this and definatley keep the stone if you can and bring to your doc to see if it's a calcium stone. I had a family member who couldn't drink milk after or anything with high amounts of calcium. Consult with your doc and in mean time drink a ton of water to get the kidneys flushed. If you have never had them before it could be coincidental or from the diet. I would not do ketogic right now for sure. Can cut back on some carbs but until you see doc avoid things with high calcium for now and plenty of fluids. Good luck 😬

I have been on it for around a week an half, an I had a kidney attack the other day and ended up in the ER.  They said I had them in both kidneys an I think my diet probably caused them.

Courtney sorry you are suffering I would not go against any Dr but with such a short time on the diet I think the extra work your kidneys are doing, aided hugely by drinking plenty of water, I think it more likely it’s moved something that was preexisting. Hope you recover very quickly.

I have had 27 kidney stones starting at 17 years of age and am now 56 (well I will be tomorrow). I would continue eating as you did before and request a 24 hour urinalysis. This way they can see what the make-up of your urine is. I had several of these done, while on different diets. They were able to determine that my body processed to much calcium, even when I was on a zero calcium diet. They then determined that I have to have calcium in my diet or my body was robbing it from bones.

I was havining a kidney stone every three to six months. We change my diet to include 64 or more ounces of water a day and I am now getting one about every TEN YEARS! Every time I use the restroom I drink a glass of water after, even in the middle of the night. Keeping your kidneys flushed is so important. Most people do not understand that your urine should be clear of color to a very pale yellow. If is not you are not drinking enough water! When I did my first 24 hour test I was told if I was unconscious they would have assumed that my kidneys were shutting down, because my output in 24 hours was so low.

Get a good urologist and drink your water!

flett7827 thanks for the recommendations and I'm so sorry you had so many...I'm having the stone analyzed and can't get in to the urologist until mid Nov. I have another on the right side waiting to come out too...I was told to drink 3 liters of water per day with lemon in it, 1 whole organic lemon per liter... Or eat large amounts of oranges, but it gives me horrible heartburn.  So I guess I'll see what the urologist is able to deduct from the makeup of the stone. I'm frustrated right now.
