I go the route of estimating the amount I will eat. You can put each expected ingredient in the app and see how the carbs work out. I might put in 2 cups of salad, 1 ounce of cheese, 2 slices of tomato, etc. so I can prepare my earlier meals to leave enough room for the meal out--plus a little wiggle room.
At the restaurant, I try to eat what I've planned out, edit the app data to match the actual ingredients I eat when necessary .
