Research is beginning to show that your genetic makeup – not diet – is the driving force behind cholesterol levels, says cardiologist Steven Nissen, MD.

  • Do you have high cholesterol from foods or genetics? I am curious because mine is genetic so I am happy to take statins.  I copied this to maybe answer your question.

To lower your heart disease risk, boost your HDL and lower your LDL cholesterol, try adding healthy fats like avocado and coconut oil and monounsaturated fat like olive oil to your diet ASAP. These are keto-approved and excellent for your heart health no matter which diet you ultimately choose.

debra06201374ad Yes, I read that same information. It’s not easy though when the recipes are often calling for butter and more butter. Cheeses!

  • Lara  I am not a Dr. but I did play one of TV.  My cholesterol is not based on what I eat.  My diet was horrible with fast foods , sugary snacks, no vegetables etc and my cholesterol is always fine.  But you are a different person.  Are you trying to lose weight or eat better?

If it is lose weight maybe try some of the healthier fats like avocado, lean cuts of meat and select nuts.

I wish you luck and I believe (some)  Drs. are changing their view of the Keto diet.

My husband took statins for years and starting having a lot of pain. He now uses OTC Cholesteroff.  I began taking it too when I started Keto. I limit butter and do not eat all of my fat macros.

  • Showthyme  I can eat butter and ribs every day and my cholesterol would need to be controlled.  My brother's cholesterol was in the 800s and the Dr. was amazed he was still alive.  My Grandmother had  high cholesterol so it is genetic.  :)
