Feeling Discouraged

Today begins week #3 of this Keto lifestyle. My husband is doing everything right along w me so I don’t have to cook things I can’t eat. We are speed walking daily 3 + miles. He is dropping weight like crazy, and I gained this week. We are eating the same things,?so I am truly baffled. We are very conscious of our carb intake. It’s unbelievable to me how many fats and proteins have carbs in them. I need to lose 30lbs and I am very dedicated and trying my hardest. Please give me some suggestions or helpful hints.. thank you all in advance. I am trying very hard to not become discouraged and eat CARBS! Lol

Hello! Amber! It is very frustrating when things aren't going as planned...my husband and I aren't doing keto together, but I'm doing keto because our 2nd Whole30 (3 years apart) did nothing (but weight gain and more fatigue) for me and he did great (again, of course!). He doesn't need to lose either. He just did it to see if some things were causing allergies. I do know our bodies are very different and so I can't compare.

Have you dropped water weight at all?? The other thing to think about is what foods your eating. Again, my hubby can do almost anything and I have to limit dairy, nuts and eggs. I avoided them entirely for the first couple weeks.

One more thing...I am relying more on the small changes I'm feeling in clothing, energy, etc. more than weight because I started out weight every day and it was discouraging. This week was that time of the month too, so I knew I wasn't going to add to the stress of that by seeing a possible weight gain. I could feel it-I could tell I was a bit more bloated.

Sarah thank you for replying. I do know that our bodies are very different and I am pretty sure my body requires a little more carb intake in order to lose weight. I am keeping measurements also and they are decreasing but of course not as much as I want them too... lol

I am a scale addict so I need to have my husband put it away so I can only weigh in once a week. I have noticed the bloating in my belly, feet and hands have decreased also.
I just need to start looking at other wins and not rely so much on the scale. 🙂

I hope you are feeling more encouraged, Amber! I get a lot from reading forums when I’m feeling like keto is going nowhere.
I do have one other thought...how is your calorie intake?

Sarah thank you for checking back in. I have limited my calories to 1000 or under per day. I want to lose weight very badly. I have been drinking a ton of water. It helps me not feel so hungry... lol

Men drop weight quicker than women, it sucks but it's true. My husband gave up beer during the week and lost 10lbs in one month. Don't compare yourself to anyone. Go at your own pace because you will lose the weight if you follow the keto diet.  It just sucks it doesn't happen quicker. I get it.

I'm not sure what your recommended calories are for basal metabolism, but don't go too low. It does send your body into starvation mode and you will hold onto fat. I found I was too tired when I was cutting calories too much. If you're hungry, eat some fat (olives, coconut butter, etc) and allow your body keep working to burn up stored glycogen and learn to burn fat.

It takes time, but I find I need snacks less if I eat a good portion of calories a day.

To give you an example...my recommended calories are about 1300 (thats a 15% deficient), but I find I need that and/or a bit more depending on how busy I am during the day (on summer break right now so some days I'm reading a lot and some days I'm outside moving more).

So, I do find that if I eat more calories a meal on busy days, I feel much better. On slow days, I find I don't need need/want as much but still shoot for the 1300ish. But it took a couple weeks to get to the point where I recognized this.

At first, I needed some snacks in between meals (the first week or so) then, I noticed I didn't need snacks IF I was eating enough at meals.

You certainly don't want to overdo calories, but I think too much of a deficient hurts your body when it's not ready for fasting.

I haven't seen the pounds melt off...frustrating, but I don't have tons to lose either.  But, as I mentioned earlier, I really am relying on how I feel and how clothes fit. For example today, one of my favorite pair of pants I've been wearing about once a week this summer are really lose on me...they always loosen up with wear (😄) but they were freshly laundered and weren't very tight at all when I put them on and now they're slipping down a lot more than last week. :) I also put my bra a notch tighter today.

Silly things maybe, but I had gained enough weight before this summer that I was going to need new clothes for work. I HATE buying new work clothes, so I'm very happy that things are fitting better and hopefully  I won't have to buy things unless I want to!
