Net Carbs v. Macro %?

My wife and I are in our '70's and have been using CarbManager for a little over a month. We've been focused on Net Carbs and haven't been able to get all the calories the app says we should have. Would anyone with more experience than we please tell us how important keeping the Macro% in check is? I think this may be part of the reason we seem to not have consistency in our urine readings. BTW, I'm rather trim (BMI 22), but my wife is not losing weight, like she wants.

I don’t think the App is telling you to eat xyz calories. The number it shows is worked out by your age, sex, height and weight that you input when you set the App up. Forget calories. I eat less than 600 a day yet it says my body will burn 1650. Therefore even the old calorie theory should mean I lose weight.

  • Thanks for the reply, Bigmark66. Understand your comment re/ calories; thanks. What I meant by macro% is, should we try to end up at the end of the day--no matter how many calories we've had--with the 70/25/5 percents of calories, if we're going for the "standard" keto diet? Hope that was clearer...

  • First of all you should always try to meet your protein goal.  Second keep your carbs at 20g net or less. Fat fills in the rest of what you eat. Add enough fats to keep you full and satisfied.  The percentages aren't necessarily as important. If you are doing keto correctly your appetite will be less. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you're full. Don't eat if you're not hungry.

  • Thanks, kpgoldstar! That's an answer I was looking for, in addition to the answer about the kcal's.  I consider this question answered; thanks, both!

Kpgoldstar hi you say we should try to hit our protein goal. I understand that our settings of age ,weight, sex & height determines calories and macros but I don’t recall the App asking at what rate I want to lose weight. So these targets are based upon what rate of loss? I can easily stay under 10g net Carbs but to hit 120g of protein per day would often mean overeating which isn’t the perfect idea. My fat percentage being higher is easy with adding Mayonnaise but somedays I don’t want a whole steak and a chicken as my two eggs and bacon breakfast sets me up for the day. I even feel stuffed after a Tuna salad at lunchtime and that’s without finishing all the leaves. I’m not anywhere near the stage where my muscles and organs will be eaten away so why isn’t 50g of protein ok for me instead of 120g as the App suggests? (My starting weight was 149kg). Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

  • Bigmark66 To be honest, I don't trust the app as far as figuring out your macros. There actually is a pull down when using the app's macro calculator that asks what your goals are as far as weight loss. However, the pull down is kind of hidden and easily missed. It also defaults to "no change" indicating that you are looking to maintain instead of lose. Perhaps that is why your protein value is set so high? Maybe try another online keto calculator such as ruled.me

Kpgoldstar thanks for that. I’ll have a look at the pull down and the other app you suggested. Very helpful

Kpgoldstar sorry one more thing. Where on this App do I find the pull down menu where I can select Loss instead of Maintain?

Samanatha thanks. Now it’s suggesting I eat 200g of Protein a day. I’m 140kg and obviously not lean so that’s about 2g of lean body weight per day. It’s bonkers.

  • Bigmark66 yeah like I said this is a great tracker, not so much a macro calculator.  Did you try the other site I sent?

Kpgoldstar yes thanks but I thought and then had it confirmed from another post that with Carb Manager if I chose Sedentary (even though I’m getting more than moderately active) then the net Carbs I set as 15g produce Protein of 108g and 145g Fat. As I’m a fat 140kg this protein goal seems more in line with 0.8g per kilo of lean body mass. I’ll still focus on Carbs but this way I feel the App isn’t giving other silly figures and so I have faith in it again. Thanks for your replies. Very helpful.

Kpgoldstar yes I did thanks and it came up with more realistic Macros. The Carb Manager App isn’t too fat off now I’ve set it Sedentary which I guess I really am apart from three 30 minutes in the Gym each week.
