New to keto

Hi, just started keto with logging everything and have lost three pounds so far.  Joined the premium membership so that I can commit to the keto diet for year.  How long does it take to get into full ketosis?  I'm still at a "trace" level.  Any help would be appreciative. 馃榾

MiAh Drankhan  Congrats on making the commitment and giving this a try. Be open to continuing for longer than a year, possibly forever, at least with low carb anyway. I have experienced tremendous success with this way of eating and then have also experienced a complete loss of all my work because I went back to carbs.  Just keep that in mind - once you figure out to what degree this works for you, don't quit, keep doing what worked!

As for ketones - I assume you're testing with urine strips?  These test wasted/unused Ketones. As you get started here your body will start to produce ketones but won't yet know how to use them for energy. You should begin to see higher levels on your test strips but then you should see those levels drop back low again. As long as you haven't upped your carb intake this is a farely good indicator your body has started to use the ketones.  You'll probably feel sorta crappy as you adjust from burning sugar to fat. It's carb withdrawal. Up your salt intake, drink broth, if you get headaches. And don't go hungry, eat enough to be satiated. Give your body time to get used to using ketones. You should be well into the process in a couple weeks and onto being fat adapted in a month or two. You'll know you're adapted to using fat for energy when you just feel great even without eating. At this point you may no longer see waste ketones or very few since your body is using them.  The best learning will be your own experience but hope this gives you some insight as to what to expect.

  • KBG thank you for your information and I won't give up if I take longer to get to ketosis. 馃榾

  • Even at trace level on the strips, you are still burning fat!  Keep it up and give your body time to adapt.

To add to this- I'm finding I'm eating less and less. Not as hungry. I guess it's okay to go for awhile fasting if your not hungry. I had to toss out some cloths on month3 almost 4. I'm defiantly fat adapted now. Feel so much better.

badmojomn Congrats on your success! I'm not sure how much you might've already learned about fasting but it is definitely beneficial. If you can increase your fasted window and decrease your eating window within each day, you will over time reset your blood glucose to a lower level and become more insulin sensitive. It takes about 12 hours to get our last meal out of our system and get the blood glucose down to base levels. The more time you spend there, the better.

tammyandjeffingwersen  start the frying pan. Make a couple pounds of bacon ahead of time. Lol. Low carb veggies. You just have to read about what's higher carb. Pinterest has some great ideas what to avoid. It helps to purge your house of items ( difficult if others are not following- I ask others to hide or store their items somewhere else not in my direct site). Good luck.

Out of all my friends who have started and stopped Keto, I always feel like I do the best in the beginning. I never get Keto flu and I transition nicely. I always reduce my carb intake for a few days before. So no bread, rice, or sugar. And made sure those two days I did a bit of cardio to help burn up my glycogen storage. Then I do an egg fast for the first two days. So hard boiled eggs for breakfast, and then omelettes for lunch and dinner. By the end of the second day, I am usually in ketosis. The following day is where I start adding in carbs up to 10. So I will make broccoli and add cheese to my omelettes. My friend who started when I did, she went on a last hoorah the day before on sugar and what not. The next day she was starving! She ate a dozen eggs and said she still felt hungry. But it's not really hunger. It's an insulin response telling your body you need more carbs. The next day she ate half as many eggs, and the day after that she was eating normal. It took 5 whole days to get into ketosis. My mom was the same way. Ravenous, miserable. Took 5 days to get into ketosis.

  • Hi Do you get more then 9 food logs a day with the premium???  I am considering the premium membership but would like to know if it includes the  unlimited food logs. More then the 9 for the free. I can't find it listed anywhere. Just that you can unlock the unlimited by paying $10 but that doesn't give you premium features but if you get the premium do you get the unlimited logs? or do you have to pay the premium subscription fee plus the $10 one time unlock??

haidymakram glad your here. This seams like a great community forming. Lots of good information from everyone. Read up all you can and watch YouTube vids on successes and staying on track. It helped me. Women take a bit longer to see results if their desired loss is lower than 20-30 pounds. Men are luckier! LOL
