What's the best sweetener?

What is the best tasting sweetener that won't mess up me going into ketosis. I can't stand stevia. Even when I get leaves fresh out of my garden it taste like a poisonous chemical to me and I've tried several brands. Most artificial sweeteners can effect your blood sugar or insulin receptors do what can I use?

  • I would say Swerve, Monkfrui. Anything that is not artificial.

I like Monk Fruit (Lo Han Guo). I used to use Xylitol too, but it's poisonous to dogs so I'm not buying it anymore but the flavor was good.

Stevia is good but all brands are not equal. I like the one from Trader Joes but I heard Whole Foods has a good one with flavors! Also Swerve but it has a few carbs, monk fruit is good.

  • Swerve for baking (both granular and powdered) and liquid stevia extract for my coffee. Don't buy the powdered stevia if it has fillers like dextrose (which is basically the same thing as sugar). Pure stevia is about 300x as sweet as sugar. If it says 1:1 sweetness as sugar, then it's got tons of fillers in it and is no good. I had to order tiny measuring spoons (pinch, tad, smidge, etc)  to measure out the pure powdered stevia that I bought. It's in a very small container but has something like 300 servings in it.

  • goplay Xylitol is known to spike blood sugar. Watch this youtube video where they actually eat straight artifical sweeteners and then test their blood sugar afterwards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYfqvTZWilw&t=866s

  • Dawn Jackson I have a type 1 diabetic child and can attest to this as he wears a CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) and his blood sugar actually spikes less with pure maple syrup than if he eats Sugar-Free Syrup with Xylitol in it... the spike is enormous!

shinybrightskies  Dawn Jackson  Now I'm doubly glad to not be using it!  Thanks for the info  folks.  I last used it maybe 15 years ago before there was a lot of info easily available.

Just tonight in the app I was looking at a peanut butter truffle recipe and it called for Xylitol ...

Dawn Jackson I use the liquid Stevia for everything. Is there a reason to use the granulated or powdered?
