Keto During the Holidays

Hey everyone, I’m new here just about 4 weeks on keto and down 10-12 lbs! But the holidays are coming up! What are peoples thoughts on having a day off on thanksgiving? I’ve had a lot of success and I don’t want to loose momentum but I do want to enjoy myself and enjoy my mom’s cooking 😬 is it ok for just a day to eat whatever I want?

First of all, what a wonderful job you’ve done so far!  You’re off to a good start.

It might be a good idea for you to examine why you’re on a keto diet: improve blood glucose and health improvement?  Simple weight loss?  The answer should set the tone for your decision.  We cannot make changes and yet stay the same as we were.  It’s one or the other.

As for a cheat day...  yes, the odds are very high that a cheat day will kick you out of ketosis and stall your progress; the magnitude of any set-back depends on the individual (we’re all different and thus respond differently).  And it may take a while for you to get back in to ketosis and make up your losses.  Again, it depends on the individual, but my research tells me that folks who took a while to get in to ketosis when they started tend to take longer the second time as well, while those who quickly achieve ketosis tend to re-enter more quickly.

You’ve ‘had a lot of success’ and ‘don’t want to lose momentum’ - typically, we can’t have both success/momentum and a cheat day.  It’s going to cost you.  Life style changes are like that.

You could always explain it to your mom that you need to make changes and cannot eat what you used to - I’m sure she’d understand.  Or you could just go ahead and cheat and then work through the consequences.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Three of the four of us in the house are doing Keto, so I've put together a Keto menu that everyone is happy with - luckily, my husband is a professional chef so he will make sure everything is done right and extra tasty! There are lots of Keto holiday recipes out there if you want to bring your own dish, or ask your Mom to have some Keto options available?

Pat F  Hey Pat, thank you so much for your response, I’m doing Keto just for weight loss, I am fortunate not to have any underlying health issues that prompted a life style change, I guess my question really was about getting back to ketosis, which I was in the first three days of keto, so if I can get back into it  quickly it will be ok for me...

Also for the record, my mom is very supportive of the keto diet and is willing to prep food just for me ❤️, but  it was more of me wanting the candied sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie 🥺
