My first post on this site:

I have been in ketosis for 5 weeks. How do I know? My urine strips are the 2 darkest/highest colors.

I use a macro calculator- 70%fat/20%protein/10%carb (1,000 calories).

Other than the initial 5 lbs (water weight)success is non existent - nothing.

Thoughts?

I am committed, consistent and actually enjoy the diet.

I do have a history with low carb - I like that I lose a craving for carbs (junk food) but in the past I was too high protein and could not convince myself to eat more fat. This macro calculator I am now using is wonderful. Also - I have READ all the do’s and don’ts - I believe for the first time I am doing this diet right. Yet I have family members who have lost 30-40 pds in recent months on low carb. Here I am at -5pds. Ugh!

Recently a friend told me that my body will first burn the daily 70% fat from macros I eat BEFORE it will burn fat (pounds) for weight loss. What?? I never heard that before - it was my entire understanding that my body could not burn my daily intake of fat calories therefore it would go into storage (pounds) to burn “fuel” thus resulting in pounds lost. Please - any help? Thanks in advance

Hi Laurie - it sounds like your body may be resistant. I have had the same problem. I switched things up a bit and have added some intermittent fasting 3 days/week.  It's a great way to break through a stall/plateau - if youre interested you might want to look up Dr. Jason Fung - I found his advice so down to earth and it made great sense to me. You can adjust intermittent fasting so that It works for you with your Keto way of eating

  • Intermittent fasting is a good option.

Also if you are consuming foods that have artificial sweeteners you may want to cut them out. Even if they are technically low  carb artificial sweeteners can cause you to not burn fat. The reason is because anytime you taste something sweet your body will preemptively release insulin because it thinks sugar is coming. Insulin causes your cells to store fat.
