WFKD - a well-formulated ketogenic diet.

This is a link to an article written by experts in the Ketogenics field. I will also post this in the best self education finds section in Low Carb chat.

The Ten Defining Characteristics of a Well-Formulated Ketogenic Diet 317

With so many confusing and differing views about how to eat properly on a Ketogenic diet, this might be a timely reset to get us all back on the same page, allowing for individual differences of course.

Some of it is heavy going more especially for new members but with such expert input, I really believe we should all make the effort to at least read and discuss questions... opinions. 🌷

Fortunately (not sure that’s the right expression 😂)  I came under the care of a cardiologist last year who supported my need for potassium supplements and halved my blood pressure medication. Left to my own general practitioner I would be eating copious amounts of bananas a day and passing out through over medication for blood pressure..... it’s the need to reduce medication that gets dangerous if not done correctly, not the ketogenic diet.

    Much respect to these doctors!

For me it has not been easy to find much knowledge of a Ketogenic diet within the circle of medical practitioners I have had any connection to. One practice nurse first recommended that I go sugar free low carbohydrate ~ but “Keto” was never mentioned. I start by telling Dr’s that I eat a sugar free, no alcohol , low carb diet... if I get any interest or positive comment, I then go on to name it ketogenic but to be under supportive supervision would be a dream come true.

I would expect that a large number of the members of this forum has some type of chronic disease and doing keto without the supervision of a specialist....

The key point for me: from  Dr phinney is the importance of watching my biological indicators while on keto because keto is not as simple as one might hope. Being in the U.K. I am going to aim for annual bloods even if I have to ask for them to be done by paying for them (sincerely hope not). My last results November 17 showed very low potassium, I have made extra sure to get lots of supplements ever since. The good news was my cholesterol and blood pressure were great.

  • Thank you so much for sharing. What a great article and so awesome to see an article from doctor's that puts together all of the information I have had to piece together from so many different sources. Unfortunately where I live there are any mainstream physicians that know what a WFKD is much less are willing to help develop and monitor a WFKD in their diabetic patients. At least we have each other!

  • Joanna Hey sorry folks, when people post a link it has to be checked by a CM staff member. Sorry for the delay.
