Counting Carbs

So I decided to pretty much go Keto. At about the same time I began - I happened to come down with the flu. So for almost a month, I have not wanted to eat - ANYTHING. I should also note that I began taking MCT oil about a week into this entire adventure. This stuff I will not be able to handle. Constant low-grade nausea.  The good news is that I lost my desired 15 lbs in 30 days. :)

Setting aside the MCT - I am finding it to be a virtual full-time job to determine what I will eat each day.  Trying to keep carbs at 10-15% is in my view not possible.  It’s all a guessing game.  So I look up what I intend to consume. Close is the best anyone will do. I find myself spending 2 hrs every morning mapping out the days food.

Lastly, I am falling way short of BMR calories. Should be getting around 1500 - getting about 900.  Bacon & Eggs.  Tuna Salad.  Low Carb Beef Stew. Virtually no snacks, as bread, grains, and sugars R no more.

I am 77 years old. Pretty much have followed a typical American diet. Pancakes, sandwich for lunch. Beef and potatoes for dinner.

Should I forget Keto, etc. and just pick up where I left off 6 weeks ago?

The MTC oil will give you a boost of energy, so I would suggest keeping with it . I never take it alone. I’ll put some on my salad, in my coffee, in my water etc, just never cook with it, as it doesn’t tolerate  the high heat. I’d stick with it, but input your new weight and maybe do a “maintenance “ version now.

    good luck

Also, just try using 1tsp at a time until you can build up to more, a large amount can take a toll on your stomach if you know what I mean.😫 Robert check recipes on youtube if you have access to the internet and you can cook there are so many more things out there to eat then the basics. I find keto recipes very easy to follow. here is a link to one of my favorite people on youtube All day I dream about food. She has a crockpot cauliflower recipe to die for:) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjRbcOrdH4KoLZHZmcUqixA

    Good luck in your journey!

  • I am about to turn 70 and just lost over 50 lbs with 17 weeks on keto. I am transitioning to a maintenance diet which will be 30-35% calories from carbs. (Truth is, I eat far fewer carbs than that; just not craving them anymore really does it.).

The 10-15% figure you mention is for who are interested in weight loss, often rapid weight loss. Having made your target weight you want to transition to a maintenance diet. Add carbs gradually, one single serving a day, then, after a week or so, two single servings per day. By "carbs" I mean fruits like apple or grapes or whole wheat crackers.

It makes no sense to be miserable on a diet -  forget the MCT. You should eat nourishing and satisfying food, foods that you like. Add chicken and fish to those other animal proteins. If you can, add yoghurt for breakfast, a serving of berries. Have a serving of greens with a dressing you make.

No snacks? If you're hungry, eat. Some nuts, 1/2 small apple makes a great snack. I snack two to three times a day. For my evening snack, you will not talk me out of my cheese and wine before bed.

I use a single serving rule: I will have only a single serving of any one food, once a day. So one serving (6oz) roast beef, one serving of berries (3oz) , one serving apple (1/2 med), cheese (1/2oz) etc. I try to make sure all allowed food groups are represented. And I record everything.

Don't forget Keto! You've done a lot of work; if you "forget" you'll just regain the weight. Eat more often, stay hydrated
