Hi!

Hi Everyone! I’ve been plugging along with the carb manager app for just about a month now and I’m not sure I’m using the app correctly. Am I aiming to consume my carb, fat, protein and calorie numbers each day? I’ve been avoiding going over the numbers but there have been a number of days where I’m short on some of my numbers. Should I be coming as close to all those numbers as I can? Thank you for your help!

Someone who is a senior member on my weight loss support site who has done a keto diet for years and also the author of Simply Keto, Suzanne Ryan (really good book for beginners that I use) both say to keep firmly to the carb max, protein is a goal to reach (meaning it's ok to go over a little, but generally too high and you are kicked out of ketosis, and you don't want to go too low to spare your muscles), and fat is to satiate hunger so if you aren't feeling hungry you don't need to fill up on fat.

It took me several weeks to get the hang of this, but generally I stick to my calorie max, eat good fats when feeling a lot of cravings and don't worry about weight loss on those days, and I do better on a low carb diet instead of strict keto and I count net carbs because I am used to eating a ton of veggies, and since I am losing 1 - 2.5 pounds a week, I am happy with the low carb diet.  At this point I could do the full keto diet (meaning get my carbs down below 20g), but don't feel I need to.  Most of the things I have read for both keto and low carb diets are that you get healthy first and then the weight drops off.  So if you are not losing much at first, don't worry.  Just get the hang of the diet and of how you structure your eating so you don't crash.

Also read up on potassium and magnesium (there are lots of good articles on electrolytes and the keto flu).  You need a lot of them, and dark leafy greens satisfy that requirement and also you can eat a ton and still be in ketosis.  I eat a huge salad for one of my meals daily with some meat thrown in and lots of healthy fat salad dressing.  After I started doing that, the keto flu has not come back.

Good luck, and write and let me know how you are doing!
