Am I doing something wrong?

3rd week on diet. Lost 7 pounds in week one. Week 2 lost 2. This week up 3. This week I've been just under 20g carbs a day. Just under 140g protein and under 2000 calories. Walking 30 min a day. I'm 6ft 1in and 250lbs. Been testing using strips for ketones. Showing none. Do I need to be doing something else?

I'm no expert AT ALL...but your calories seem really low for your weight...

On some other forums (not as sure about this one) there is a general consensus that when doing keto there isn't as much need to restrict calories.

I didn't want to buy into this, but am starting to see that I really need more to eat and am still losing. It's not rapid (water weight gone) and I've stopped weighing this week after camping and bloating from PMS, but I'm still seeing small changes in my body. Granted, I don't have a lot to loose. I'm a short, smaller gal (125 pounds), so my calorie needs aren't huge, but I'm finding I still need more than the recommended "restriction" in order to feel energized and functional. But I haven't seen it hurt me by adding pounds.

Are you keeping track of fat percentages? If you're meeting carbs and protein, what does fat look like?

Sarah thanks for your help. Today was the first day I met the fat goal. Every other day has been below. Same with my calories. For me it says around 2200. I've been well below that. I drink more then 8 glasses a day. I will up my calories. It seems counter-intuitive. I'm going to keep plugging away.

It does seem counter intuitive, but too far below for your calories needs and your metabolism will slow down because it's not getting enough energy just to do the basic functions. Especially if you're adding exercise on top of that.

I found I needed to drink a TON of water (ok, more like 100+ fl oz). I was keeping track for a while. Now, I just am more in a habit and also find on hot days when I'm out and about I have to drink more.  I have had to add electrolytes (Ultima) and salt too though to keep from getting cramps!

wags032 Congrats on the fat goal! Some days, I still have to make an effort... but I can't do dairy and nuts, so I find it harder to just sneak it in.

I'm  not sure what to say about not seeing ketones yet... :( Some folks don't trust them at all. They've been helpful for me to see that I am producing ketones. My only thoughts would be maybe trying again when you're hitting fat goals? Also, maybe it's a bad batch? Not sure if that's common, but three weeks in does seem like a long time to get ketones.

Try doing a beef and butter fast.   You do it for 4 days but it jump starts you in to ketosis fast.

Hi there. I am almost three weeks in to Keto. Using the test strips my first week was midrange in colour measuring between 1.5-3.0. Yesterday and today it’s almost negative colour :( I’ve been consistent with my diet, no cheating. I’m tiny person so I’m allotted 1200 calories a day . I have a hard time getting fats in but my day to day average is 70%fat, 5% carbs and 25% fats. I lost 5lbs first week and have yet to weigh again. Do you think I’m out of Ketosis since the strips are paler in colour/lower numbers ? Or do you think it’s something else?

Just last week I had ketones go really low. I think it's too early for me to be fat adapted and they came back up in the next couple days. The only two things I can think of were that I tried some keto icecream over a couple days and it had a ton erythritol and dairy (don't do dairy a ton) and my period was about to start (hence the inability to resist buying ice cream 😂 ). I'm not sure, but I'm leaning toward too much artificial sweetener?
